If you have the "bill of sale". Then it can be done. Get a copy of "bill of sell", and the VIN number. Most of the work can be done by phone with the DMV. (Beats going there, And doing it at the counter) They can do a full history on the VIN, making sure the title is clear. And they will send you the paperwork for a lost title. If the title is not clear, then it gets a lot harder. I inherited a 2001 Yukon, A 27 ft. formula boat & trailer, Last year. With no titles to any of them. And all had loans against them, but paid off. I had to title them in my name, So I could sell them. It took about 1 1/2 months to do, Because of having to clear titles. The boat trailer was the hardest, last known registration was 1989, In a different state. And the VIN # said it was a 1990 shore lander. The original registration was wrong to start with.

I got mine with no title or key. But it was easier for me. The cops had me tow the lonley little xj off the side of the street for sitting inactive to long. Then it sat in my penn for a couple years and nobody ever called about it. So I spent $25 and filed for it. And now I have a titled xj I get to spend lots of money on.
