My drivers seat sits about 3 inches lower than my passenger seat because of compression of the foam. After 16 hours in a day driving mine back from Baja, I can answer your question in 1 word YES! They suck. Was thinking about suspensions seats before, but now am squirreling the money away to actually get them!

Never had a problem with mine, but the backseat it's squishy also, I got rear ZJ seats to swap in my XJ last weekend. Plus I love the look of the headrests in the back

I'd love to see some pics by those of you who have either reinforced the stock seat brackets or modified them to fit some cheap Ebay race seats.

I've owned 3 XJs. All stock seats. Current one I've had for 7 maybe 8 years (01 sport). I've driven to canada (400 miles) several times and never had any issues with discomfort. Also driven down to Florida (1100 miles) in a 97 sport and again no complaints with the seat.
I never really get to ride in the back seat but my 96 Country had head rests on the front and back i believe. Only slept across the backseat once but I don't really have any recollection of the experience.
My only problem with my current seats is that the leather has torn on the side probably from general use and age. Will probably get full seat covers for the front in the future.

So I have an 87 right now I use as a dd. Got a donor 89 and used to have another 87 that I loved before some idiot tried to thread the needle and T-bone me. Every single driver seat is/was no good. They all have/had busted bottom brackets where they bolt in. My current seat is so bad I've had to make an actual backing setup out of wood to keep it sitting up; it is completely busted and won't even sit up without being on the back seat.
I've been wondering how much trouble I'll have trying to swap in a junkyard seat. Do all years interchange? I need a new drivers seat desperately and am getting a rolled 98 here at the end of the month and hoping that it will fit.

I plan on doing that, but I don't want seats with high bottom bolsters. I might even make fixed position brackets for the driver seat. I have that in my Corvette, and the high bolster makes me have to climb out of the seat instead of sliding out. Granted, it's a more extreme Sparco Evo seat, but I still want the bottom of the seat to be flatter. I can see this being a bigger issue with a lifted jeep. What I'd really like is a thinner seat that allows me to lower the seat and free up some space behind the seats. It's not much, but if not for that, I'll just keep the original seats until they break.

Yes, sort of. It depends on what part of the seat is broken. As far as I can recall, 1984-1995 used identical seats. In 1996 the floor changed to include a fancy little crossmember, and as a result the bracket that the seats slide back-and-forth on changed. However aside from the bracket that mounts to the floor, the seats themselves are the same. ZJ Grand Cherokee seats will work too.

Okay...I've been watching this thread for a while...I'll be the one to say it. Cherokee seats suck. Not for the comfort, they're actually pretty comfy for the most part, but long drives, any seat gets old...the thing that makes them crappy is the cheap-*** metal they used to construct them, the frame breaks pretty easily. I have repaired both my front seats by welding them, and reinforcing them with flat stock and gussets. After the fix, they're pretty good. However, someday I would like to get some more comfy front seats in there. Not sure what I want yet.

I just got home from my longest drive in my XJ, 4 hours round trip that we only stopped long enough to load a set of tires in the back and headed home again. I had zero comfort issues with the seats, and didn't even find myself needing to get out and stretch. That last part is odd since I can't even sit on the couch for more than an hour without getting stiff

I didn't find the seats uncomfortable, but the stock front seats are weak at the mounting point. Mine snapped while going to get a pizza (a sign that I really didn't need that pizza, lol).
I now have all leather seats (front and rear) from a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. The front bolted up directly to the rails. The rear seats required modification.
