A 1995 ZJ +4.0 + 231,000 miles + 32" tires + 3.55 gears + 4" lift + any kind of grade = a gutless pig that has to be floored to make it up a hill. Ask me how I know.

I bought a '94 brand new with the 5.2, and it pulled like a train. The Quadra-Trac was nice for boat ramps too.

The grands are a little bigger and heavier then a xj so you kinda want a v8 one.

I really like the relative simplicity of the XJ, but in general I do prefer simple, honest machinery. To me having crank windows, manual locks, and a plain non-electronic key is a plus! Also while not a muscle car by any stretch the XJ steps out smartly with the 4.0. Also most things seem easy to work on, with a few notable exceptions such as the heater core and evaporator. Overall it's about as bulletproof a vehicle as I think you'll find and just about infinitely adaptable if desired.

Granted an XJ is not very luxurious but I find the comfort level OK, and you can swap in ZJ seats if desired for a little more cushiness. (It's something I've been thinking of, but on a rust belt vehicle getting the seats out can be a sporting proposition.)

Not always true.. Many v8s did still have a Dana 35.

I've had the grand Cherokee (zj) and the Cherokee (Xj) Both were 98s, both were pretty clean, the Zj is a Laredo it has all the bells and whistles and the XJ was bare bones, Manuel door locks, Manuel Windows, no radio, but it did have AC and everything worked and everything was simple. On my zj, both back windows don't work, the sunroof does not work, the drivers side electric seat controls don't work. They put all the electric do dads on and after time they eventually fail and I won't submit myself to a mental he11 by trying to fix all of them, it's a jeep. It doesn't need a sunroof. But it comes down to personal taste. On 6.5 inches I wouldn't be worrying about the electric stuff at all if I were u, unless that kind of stuff would really bother u. But as a off road unit and if it don't have any rust and it isn't beat to pieces then go for it, but keep an eye out for an Xj

XJ, WJ both have a place at my house and have 2 different uses neither can do all the other does but the 04 WJ is as new a Grand as I will own and has every option offered by Chrysler and they ALL WORK!

They are like any other car if you keep up with repairs taking care of problems as soon as they come up you don't end up with a bunch of things not working. Then it becomes overwhelming and to costly to repair all that has been neglected and nice SUV are junked out.

A zj and wj can out flex a xj with the real coil springs they have. And both can have long arms front and back. The aftermarket is about pair on the grands with the xj just the parts for the grands cost more.
