Is any of this really worth the board wars? The xterra does not compare to 90s Jeep.
If anything they compare to 4runners of the same years. and the latest 4runner would compare to the armada.
If you want to compare a nissan to a 90s Jeep, then compare the same generation Pathfinders.
The WJs are just as capable as the ZJ as the ZJ is just as capable as the XJ.

The Xterra is a great vehicle. But just like the FJ cruiser they are a Underpowered pig that sits to low, and the few aftermarket lifts that ARE available for the Xterra still wont take it high enough to support a 35-37" Even if they did, would the Stock IFS drivetrain support it?
Another problem i have is, they have a great resale value, Vehicles are not supposed to be an investment, but why play with the value?
Now that i have pretty much bashed them, I will go into the positives.
The Xterra makes for a GREAT adventuring rig. Something you can use for an off highway 2 day adventure into the unknown and unpack a tent where it seems nobody has ever been. They have a comfertable interior and they ride fairly nice. A little Top heavy for my liking, but i like the way they look with a 2-3" lift and 32s.
Most of my Problem with using the Xterra as an actual wheeling rig, has nothing directly to do with the Xterra. it has to do with value. for $5000 you can build a very capable rig with 35s, geared and locked. and not worry about resale. as you'l likely sell it for more then what you paid for it after riding it hard and putting it away wet. Or you can park it in your garage and enjoy a better street driver that you pay/paid 400/mo on for 4 years.

Also, king of the off-road over here is the Land Rover Defender, which (correct me if I'm wrong) isn't available in the USA. It really is good offroad, light and nimble with great clearance, approach angles and articulation but driving it on road is about as much fun as being eaten by sharks. They are so uncomfortable, noisy and slow they make a stock XJ feel like a feather bed.

titan swapped fully armored battle wagon. 300hp. 2000Watts of lighting. 34's, 10" front travel. 14" rear travel. IFS. yes its $$$ but it's also super unique
FWIW, I had an XJ and LOVED it! great trucks! I plan on getting another really soon as my dedicated trail rig.
X's are just plain damn tough trucks....but then again so was my XJ...
hope to see you guys on the trials. Cheers!

P.S. I'm locked, have a bulletproof drivetrain, and just ordered 35's ....so yes you can do it....but it will cost you a hell of a lot more than an XJ similary equipped....

Now that's not nice. Lol. Was gettin around to joining the forum anyhow. My buddy ( hodge-xj) on here and I are always doing work on his rig . He has an xj on 35s. Its good to know what im workin on...been snoopin around for quite some time...just never joined up....I wheel with cherokees often. The are formidable opponents (allies ) on the trail. I just have winch them out of sticky mud pits often cause they are so light.... but on the rocks they will destroy even a titan swapped Xterra if they are built well.

not all Xterras are created equal.

If you go the thenewx.org and read a what did you have before your Xterra a good 25% of them had an XJ before their X. The Xterras kinda carry the XJ torch now from the factory. You can get lockers a 6 speed a 4.0 V6 and they do dang well off road. I wheel with a lot of X guys and they are great new rigs that you can take your kids to school on monday and wheel sat kind of thing

Wow, that X posted above is pretty sick, but I bet was spendy as hell for all that stuff.
That said I am a Nissan Fan(I had a '97 Altima before my XJ that I owned for 10 years and replaced nothing except two alternators, brakes, oil and tires! Impressive track record considering I delivered pizzas for 3 years in it at college). And I had also looked into buying an Xterra before I went with the XJ. The Xterra was so heavy and expensive in comparison to the XJ that I couldn't resist the jeep. Now after owning mine for almost a year, you'd have to kill me to make me get rid of it. It dominates the NE Minnesota/NW Wisconsin snow we have and it is so cheap to fix. I do like the looks of the Xterra, but the XJ is simply classic. Just looking at mine I have memories of abusing my uncle's XJ in high school or my roommate's my freshman year at college, or my old friend/boss's at the tv station I used to work at(we'd go drive it around the antenna farm in Duluth).
