Cherokee xj or chief ?
Hello I am new to this forum. This Friday I am buying a jeep, but i have two choices between the two different jeeps.*One is 1991 jeep Cherokee xj limited 4x4 and the other is a 1977 chief Cherokee 4x4. I have listed the pros and cons below.
1991 jeep Cherokee xj limited 4x4
Pros
It sells for 1 grand
Already lifted I think 3 inch lift from rancho
Side bar each sides
new passenger and back seat
Two new front tires
Body in good shape maybe new paint but unnecessary*
Cons
150k miles
Driver seat need replacement
Headliner all torn up
Need new rear tires
Turns on fine but can't be turn off. Have to disconnect the ignition from the motor
Expire tags
Rear bumper was hit by another car need new stock bumper or afermarket*
1977 chief Cherokee 4x4*
Pros
It sells for 1200
All original*
It starts great
Seem no problem with the motor*
401 amc motor v8
Seats look ok
Mileage not sure he said he thinks it's approx 120k
Cons*
Interior needs to be replace such as carpet and maybe headliner
All 4 tires need to be replace
Paint job is ok
Needs new fender flares all 4*
Expire tags
Owner of the chief had told me that it runs good and it kick ***
I love to off road everywhere and sometime on the dunes
But mostly on dirt or long trails
and maybe few rock crawling
Which jeep will be the best and why?
My concern with the chief that it has higher gas milage but it's v8 more power for off road.

I've personally only owned my jeep for 2 weeks and the Cherokee 4.0 has a lot of power surprisingly. So I'd take the cherokee for better gas mileage and decent power.

All Depends in what you want. I've personally owned three Cherokee's and know I'll be buying another sometime in the future. I also have a weak spot for FSJ's and Espically Cherokee Chief's. It all depends what you're going to use it for really.

Asking between these two on a forum which is primarily xjs, your going to get everyone saying xj. If you asked this on a full size cherokee forum, you'd get everyone saying the Chief. They're both cool vehicles but I only have experience with xjs. Your best bet is asking some unbiased people lol

While the full size Cherokees are tough as nails, the XJ will be a better option in the long run. The full size parts are getting harder to find and more expensive. Parts for the AMC motors are hard to find and most of them are special order pieces.
The XJs are still plentiful both on the raod and in the junkyards for parts. Gas mileage will be better as will overall dependability with the 4.0 engine.
