While the full size Cherokees are tough as nails, the XJ will be a better option in the long run. The full size parts are getting harder to find and more expensive. Parts for the AMC motors are hard to find and most of them are special order pieces.
The XJs are still plentiful both on the raod and in the junkyards for parts. Gas mileage will be better as will overall dependability with the 4.0 engine.

Point very well made, we are all a little biased. Especially myself after owning 5 XJs. But don't get me wrong, if I get my hands on a reasonably priced full-size Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, or J truck I will love it like a dirty little mistress that does all the things that the XJ won't.

If the cheif has a straight rust free body I would go for it, its hard to find a rust free fsj for 1200, especially a cheif. Then find an xj for a dd/trail rig, xjs are cheap and easy to come by. Thats what I would do but do whatever feels right to you and the size of your wallet.
