Welcome, Sir Edward!
XJ is a body style. All classic Cherokees from 1984 to 2001 (and later in a few countries outside the U.S.) are XJs. "Country" is a trim level.
In 97, the body got a slight remodeling, but they are still XJs.
Now, there is also the Grand Cherokee. This is a different vehicle. It has a lot in common with the XJ, but it's not a Cherokee. It's a Grand Cherokee. A lot of people are too lazy to use the correct name, so they cause confusion by talking about their "Cherokee", when they don't even own a Cherokee.
