I wanted to share something I found yesterday. I was poking around looking for the formula for Cosmoline. I was digging into lot's of stuff related like Naptha, Vaseline, Paraffin, Etc. And ran across an article that said the main ingredient in Marvel Mystery oil is plain old Mineral Spirits. Paint thinner...

Just thought I would share that as possible useful information about cleaning out engines.

It also turns out this is what BBQ charcoal starter fluid happens to be...

It really is simpler than most would think. So? Have you came across any recipes for cosmoline? It and similar can be bought but it is expensive! I'm sure it's just a basic simple mix, but it is very elusive to find any information, everyone is trying to remove it not apply it. lol

Good to know.... I eyeballed the top when I recently replaced the valve cover gasket... and it honestly didn't have that much crud on anything.
Does the T3 have a heavier duty detergent package than the T6? I notice a little change using the T6 so far. so it's doing it's work.

I've never thought about that on the engine itself.... but for a long time I've actually rubbed in some petroleum jelly for a thin layer on my hands before working on engines... and especially when doing brake jobs. It keeps the pores sealed so the crap comes right off when washing at the end.... and keeps you from having to use a pair of "b1tch mittens".

I never knew that about the Marvel Mystery oil, I use that stuff allot and it seems to work. It used to be common practice to put lacquer thinner in the fuel tank to clean out the injectors, so putting the Mystery oil in is basically doing the same thing.

I have been posting the same in most of the oil threads that come up. I haven't tried Delo or any other diesel oils but I have tried a few different gas motor oils. Every time it's the same result. The motor is much louder with anything but Rotella. Same goes for any 5/40, much noisier. Same thing happens when I'm near an OCI. I can tell when the oil is breaking down because my motor starts getting louder. I also state that I have not tried every oil out there. There may be an oil that quiets my motor as Rotella does but why bother looking for something else when what I use is fine.

I'm also not going to state that every 4.0 needs or should use Rotella. Its what works for me and results may vary as with anything on these Jeeps. Glad to hear someone else with the same results.

Also why not have a couple oil/Rotella stickies and ban any new oil threads? Or an all oil thread?

all of my engines have been the complete opposite. they are much noisier after an oil change and quiet down as the oil gets older.

Because no matter what we as mods do, they all turn to ****. We're tired of chasing our tails on it. As far as a "ban" on new threads, we have zero control over what people post. We only deal with the aftermath.

There's plenty of threads discussing this tired, old topic. Search. Because I, for one, will refuse to do a sticky on any oil thread.

It wouldn't be, trust me, LOL

I've said it before, I'll say it again.

Run what you want. As long as it meets what was engineered for your ride, and you do regular changes and filters, you should be fine.

I've yet to use it in they way myself... but I've seen hard proof of what it can do when running it in a motor... larger or small.
Actually watched a video not too long ago where they pulled a little 4 stroke apart, documented the build up internally. Then put it back together, cleaned it out by running a MMO combo through it.. then pulled it back apart, and it was night and day. Really broke down and expelled fairly heavy carbon deposits. Pretty cool.
You never know what products will turn out to be pure snake oil... and ones that actually deliver. From what I've seen, MMO really does the trick for a lot of things.

Did you see that it is actually BBQ charcoal starter fluid? lol

^^ Amen to that.... I know you and I have tag-teamed in a thread on it before. And this is what it comes down to. The vast majority is splitting hairs.... the most important thing you can do for any of your rigs is REGULAR MAINTENANCE INTERVALS. Period. Changing the oil and filter when it's supposed to be done far out-weighs what brand/blend you put in it.
