Ive painted a motorcycle tank with a can of rustoleum and a separate can of clear that had active hardener in it.
For a car i would totally recommend a cheap spray gun*air compressor required. See if home depot rents orbital polishers for finishing

For a good job, many many years in the past, I shot my 69 Camaro at home with Dupont DuLux enamel.
The pro shops wanted $1000 to do it. I spent a year stripping the car, all body work. Red oxide primed all over. Asked pro's for a quote. Still $1000. That's a lot when your a kid even when making the big money at family bakery, $6 hr. Yes long ago.
Finished block sanding, wiped all over with rag moistened in gas (leaded, yes many many years ago). Let dry thoroughly.
Plastic draped the garage. Air blow down one last time. No previous spray experience.
10% Xylene thinner. Vapour mask. Garage door open. Take an air break between coats.
Shot it myself. Every paint defect in the book was present somewhere. But did it myself and I was pleased with the results. That paint job was good for 10 years after.
Home built 9.5:1 325HP at rear wheel on dyno, SB327, Herb Adams full kit suspension, TH350 with kit and Quicksilver shift, lots of go fast accessories, pulled full rpm in hi gear, 156 mph. Placed very well in national slalom racing. Made more than lost bucks in non sanctioned races. Then stupid me, I sold the car, duh. Hindsight, probably kept me alive.
With older now reflexes, best I keep to spinning wrenches on crawlers.
So regardless of the short story long.
Dupont Dulux was an easy application and durable results.
