Crank Sensor plug does not match

Crank Sensor plug does not match
I have a '96 Cherokee sport (4.0 HO) automatic. I t died last week, and have narrowed it down to the crank position sensor. I purchsed a new one, but when I roved the old on from the vehicle, the new one does not make. I cannot plug into the wireing harness plug. I checked online (napa) and is the correct one. Anyone else ever experience this?? Not realy sure what to do next. Any ideas or thoughts are welcome.

X2 I have had the wrong part in the right box. It was for an accumulator. I would bring the old one with you. Has anyone ever messed with any of the wiring on your jeep before?

I have viewed the parts online to make sure. It actually shows the plug end which is exactly what I bought, but does not match what the plug is on the old one. I have even checked other sites, they all show the same. I will bring it back, but don't know why mine is different. If I have to will go to a Jeep dealer and bring the old part with me. And yes I have gotten the wrong part in the box before. I have been doing all my own work and all my vehicles for years.
If I have to I will just the plug and resplice...but I shouldn't have to.

Dont cut and splice... may not work out for you.
Your 96 is the first year for OBDII, i'm betting thats the issue. Take it back and have the parts monkey pull all the Cherokee CPS he has in stock and match up the plug.

Well I went back into Napa online and looked at the '97 Jeep Cherokee Crank Sensor. That has the plug I need. So maybe when the Jeep was built it was near the end of the '96 run. I will bring the vin # with me and order the '97 crank sensor...That shoudl do the trick....Thats a first for me.

Good deal, there are several variations on the plugs and as mentioned cut and splice does not always work out. The different years created slightly different signals being transmitted to the ECU, so the correct CPS which matches the ECU is essential.
