I saw their website back early last summer, before I got my XJ. Basically I was just looking at images to see what setups I liked and to give me an idea of how I wanted mine to look when it was finished.
The price point of ALL their vehicles is ridiculous. That should be the first clue. A '96 suburban for $25k? A 2000 4-runner for $45k? Get the F*!K out of here.....

And even a dude with a tiny di*k, flat billed hat, white framed sunglasses, and monster energy drink in hand wouldn't pay $100k for a jacked up Ford so he can compensate for lack of manliness.... https://inventory.davisautosports.co...0-drw-platinum The thing is ugly anyway..... (actually I can see some chode paying that much for something like that....)

They're "restoring" ****ty vehicles and trying too make way to much money back on them. There's a sucker in every bunch.... just got to find that village idiot!!!

I stumbled across this thread and offer my comforting words to all those duped by Davis and any other thieving bast@rd shops who rip people off. I went though a friggin' nightmare with a shop in Lexington, NC called Tom's 4x4. Rip off artist of the highest order that I have documented in another thread. At 57 yrs. old, I have seen good people duped after looking at BBB reviews, Yelp reviews, Google reviews, etc. Heck, it has happened to me too. If a person can afford to buy a tricked out Cherokee XJ that a shop builds for them in good faith, why be so critical? Why hate on the person who was duped instead of the shi#*y shop? I was talking to my neighbor who's son is a medical malpractice lawyer, right after my ordeal at Tom's 4x4. This jackass had the audacity to laugh in my face and say, "I guess that's money you threw up a wild hog's ****! They really stuck you!" Yet almost two years ago when he had a new washer and dryer delivered and installed by a big box store; he knocked on my door after his new washing machine had sprayed water on his wall for two weeks. A tiny pinhole leak in the hot water hose caused all his problems. He was livid and more so when the sheetrock repair and paint job cost him nearly $1,000. I never said the first snide word to him about his duped purchase and my wife allowed his wife to use our washer and dryer for 2.5 weeks until the repairs to their laundry room were repaired.
Rip off artists have sold snake oil, bad stock advice, bad legal advice, performed bad medical procedures, sold junk cars to friends, told their girl they didn't have an STD, told their girl they would be there when their child was born, sold land that wouldn't perk, etc, and laughed all the way to the bank. I can only hope that those things never happen to the haters on this site. HoundDogXJ out

Let me just say I know all about Smittybilt and their parent/sibling companies. that stuff is hot expensive garbage. dunno why DAS says turnaround is 18 months on something like this. I'd have been told to get it done in 2 days. They also have a $90,000 LS cherokee where the video shows them installing new drum brakes...$90,000.... i've never seen a place where the CHEROKEES were more expensive than the WRANGLERS.

  • Not $90K but higher than you'd expect.

I just can't believe someone actually pays the prices they want....
More than likely some pretentious a-hole that has more money than sense and just wants a "sweet" and shiny off road rig that they can boast about how much better it is than their friends.....

Come on Rocky, you know you would love to have one! If I had the money and it wouldn't be missed I'd buy one super fast. Remember, those buyers are collectors that have everything but a tricked out XJ. If I win the Mega Millions, I'm buying me one and you one. Mine will be nicer though!

I just ordered a “restoration” build on a ‘99 XJ and can share some thoughts on why someone might pay what appear to be “ridiculous” prices.

Full respect and cred to those who have spent years developing the skills necessary to complete a full build. But for those without this experience, we have to pay someone to do it for us. Over time, I hope to learn how to do a lot of the work, but even if I had the skills, finding the time would be tough.

For some, time is more of a limited resource. I suspect this is his target group for the more extensive builds. He is sending Jeeps to Malibu (see Army Green build), that’s a clue!

In terms of the negative feedback from a few on this forum, could it be that they underestimated the risk of buying a 20 year old used car? I’m hoping to reduce this risk by replacing many of the major components. Btw, used car dealers are not known to have great reputations but his feedback is pretty decent (4.1/5 stars on Google) for being in a tough business.

From my perspective, it makes sense to buy from them if the build is extensive. Buying a stock Jeep or one with minor upgrades from them is silly.

Will be happy to share more thoughts as the build progresses. Here are some specs, feel free to give feedback:

Stroker 4.7L engine swap
New exhaust system
3” lift
Slip yoke eliminator and new driveshaft/chain
Air lockers front and back
New brakes, rear disc conversion
Diff covers
Steering stabilizer
New shocks & leafs
New wheels & tires
New paint / kevlar
New leather seats
NAV and touchscreen
Backup camera
New AC system
Bull bar & ARB lights
Roof rack
Dynamat floorpan
New carpet
New speakers
Custom steering wheel
Etc.... +++

I've been buying 20+ year old cars since I was younger than 20 - I'm fully aware of what it means to have one. The issue we have with Davis is the return on investment. For what you pay, you'll often get cheap aftermarket parts from Smittybuilt and/or Rough Country. Not that those are bad options right out of the box - it's just a very entry-level product given the cost and build-quality. Like, what does 3" lift even mean? A $500 Rough Country lift or a well-matched set of springs, shocks, shackles, and control arms from reputable companies with parts not made in China?

If I'm going to spend that much money on a vehicle, I'd rather pick out all the aftermarket parts and then hire out a professional to put them together... or stubbornly do it myself over the course of years of weekends. I don't like that all of the Davis XJs look like they are adorned with cheap trinkets but have impeccable paint. Hope yours turns out differently - the lockers and engine alone are going to set you back a pretty penny.

I say good on ya' mate! Who really cares about return on your investment mentality...any one and I mean any one who thinks a car, truck or SUV is an investment, other than a classic rare collectible that isn't driven is bonkers anyway. Haters say this and that and why they don't like this brand of accessories or that brand and the truth be told they aren't running Bilstein shocks, trussed Currie axles or any high end product. It doesn't make them bad people, just haters. I'm proud to say most of what I'm running on my mini-resto is Amazon, Napa and Walmart based. Heck, I went with a new NeverStart battery from Wally's World just to save a dime. A guy at work today said in our breakroom, "Man, you put a NeverStart in your Jeep, you're one cheap F'er!" Another guy answered him and jokingly said, "Danny, shut the hell up, your 46 years old and live with your sister, you cheap bum!" I just wish y'all could have 'heard' his face turning red! Deep North, keep us posted on your rig, I'm happy if your happy! Cheers!

Amazon, Walmart, O'Reilly's and NAPA are not my sponsors! I give them money and they sell me cheap stuff! Did I mention Maaco?

Thanks guys... Agree, buy stocks or real estate if ya want return on investment... Not gonna get it in a modded-out vehicle!

However, fair points on putting cheap parts and swag on a Jeep with a million dollar paint job. Doing my best research as a newb to avoid that. We're doing a Warn Zeon 10-S winch, Bilstein shocks, ARB lockers, ARB Solis lights, Old Man Emu leafs... only Smittybilt I'm considering is the front bumper.

Think it's hard to beat the pro-look of the DAS Jeeps (subjective of course), just gotta make sure the components are top-quality. Like Reagan said, "trust, but verify".

Delivery not expected until June, but I'll keep you all posted with progress pics. Thanks!

ROI doesn't have to refer just to liquid capital. It was more of a figure of speech referring to paying a lot for cheap, crappy Chinese-made aftermarket parts rather than a literal use of the phrase. I've put probably close to $20k into mine since 2013 which includes selling it and buying it back - I'd maybe get 15% of that back if I sold it at top market value today. However, all my investments have returned hours and years of enjoyment, so...

You do you man. Keep us posted - maybe it'll change some minds!

I support Battle in this one just gonna put that out there. He makes very valid points and is just speaking truths not trying to bash anyone.

His point is that Jeep XJ's are real offroad vehicles not mall crawlers and when you go to someone like Davis-Auto they put together something that may be alright for a while but if you genuinely use it for what is intended it will not last you very long.
Guess what though, my uncle has a huge truck with 37's and a procomp lift with blocks in the back that are like 2 feet long because it still has stock leaf springs. Some people just really and truly don't care, they just want the paint to be impeccable and the tires to be huge and they don't care if it rubs under any actual flex lol or if the suspension feels like a boxing match. They ignore all those things because what they bought was not for durability or with the intention of it being made in the USA, it was to make them smile. So buy it or don't buy it. I think based on their videos if you buy one with a rebuilt motor or extremely low miles and a solid resto, just the fact that they check all the electrical connections will give you lots of peace that on a 20 year old vehicle you aren't going to run into any electrical gremlins for a while.

Good luck everyone.
