the most reliable low maintenance vehicle i have ever had was a 92 accord bought it for 1300 and sold it for 1200 after 4 years of college abuse i put 70k on it changed the battery once and the alt. That was it... great car, it saw lots of seasonal roads at high speeds went off the side of the road into a field a few times by accident... never broke anything. I have never "killed" any vehicle, but i also know how to buy them... and i do tons(weeks and weeks) of research the vehicle and every difference in every change(whats the best year to buy). I usually end up selling them for what i bought them for or close. I plan on keeping the jeep and my prelude forever, civics, integras and chevy trucks are kinda like tissues for me

ive got 230,000 miles on my xj i do all of my own work but other than a new oil pump and basic tune ups i have not had any trouble with it i would drive it cross country. now i have had plenty of yota's and a dodge and chevy, had all kinds of issues with them, had an 04 nissan frontier and it was a great truck till i changed oil brands one day like a dumb-*** and went cheap then the lifters started tappin. love my xj hands down and will only own jeep or somthin with a diesel engine in it from now on

Reliabilty? Well my brother in law drove the TOYota RAVing mad 4 all the way from Florida. In the blowing snow my XJ only had to pull him out of the ditch once, well twice since I had to pull him from 2 directions (why no decent hook points on the yota? why can't inlaws find a way to steer back onto the road?) That yota was very reliable, yota 1 - inlaw 0.
That was two years ago. Apparently that TOYota van is now gone, however my XJ just rolled 542000km, and I'm still tuggin em out regularly.
Reliability?? 22 years past since AMC left it's mark on me, the XJ is still runnin daily and travellin 50000km/year.
Why does my restore corral hold two jeeps a waitin?

I flushed the dexcool out when the warranty expired, once a year I do all the drive line fluids and grease all the zerks, change the oil every 2500-3000 miles, spray the whole underside with my own rustproofing spray, I check random electronic plug ins and put diaelectric grease in the plugs, and replace fuel filters. I feel because of my maintance this blazer has been the most dependable vehicle she has ever had. I would not stop myself from driving it to California and then over to New York. I am very **** when it comes to maintenance and if they still made XJ Cherokees today I would do all this from day one so I can keep it nice and problem free.
Oh no I realize you were lol I was agreeing with you, I'm the same exact way with all of my vehicles and I can Completely understand and agree with you. I'm just as meticulous with my services and I can defiantly understand how you were able to keep that Blazer going or any vehicle for that matter. I have to say thank you because its people like you that made my life working as a tech easier, it'd be nice if everyone followed the same service interval as you but then again if it weren't for people that didn't I wouldn't have had a job, or manufacturer defects of course haha. When I get a new vehicle I plan on following the same thing as I do with my XJ

The antifreeze turned to acid in the old models and corroded the heads, they rebuilt the heads in the early 90s so the other owner may have changed it but just be careful about it and drain and refill it every year, my old man always did in his 89yota 4x4

yea its an 83 that the PO claims to have done a basic rebuild......however the guy was a cheap raging drunk so hard to say what was actually done, and the engine was pretty grimey lookin as if it hadnt been out in years, all i know is it had decent numbers when i did compression tests and ive run the crap out of it without issue, only issue i had was with a shutoff or some **** on the carb but ended up it was a common problem that just needed to be grounded.

Well the XJ leaks oil like a **** so its probably oil residue nothing a little cleaning won't solve, also the shocks tend to be blown so get new ones if that's the case and the leafs could probably be replaced but that's all your discretion

One of the reasons I got a cherokee was the reliability ratings. Compared to every other vehicle in its class, it gets the best mileage, has the best reliability, and the best after market, in my opinion. The toyotas may be more reliable, but you could buy 3 XJs for the price of a 4runner. Also, screw toyota. I had one before and now I hate toyota.

Your XJ is a Toyota recovery rig now huh? And yeah my friends 98 4runner blew the tranny after 150k my 98 has 267k on original engine and tranny and it still runs like new. Mechanicly xjs are sound just be meticulous about maintance like you should be anyways and you'll be fine

The simple and rugged design is what makes XJs so reliable, nothing is overly complicated or over engineered on an XJ.
