And do you think having it been white beforehand kinda helped make the color after stand out a little better? Like you think I should "prime" it white first then the color?

I primed the areas that were bare metal after sanding it down....and if you want that color its john deere green from sherwin williams, but I'm sure you can find similar stuff cheaper....just make sure if you roll it you thin it out a lot, like 1 to 1 or 2 to 1....and wet sand orange peel lightly and you should be good

What you should do is just sand it to the point where the gloss is off and its just dull color looking paint and if there is a few bare metal areas use a rustoleum sandable primer out of a spray can and then roll on the paint after, 1 to 1 means eaqual amount of paint as with the thiner 2 to 1 means 2 parts paint and 1 part thiner.....they sell mixing cups so it easier

We painted my son's CJ-5 with single stage paint. The color was a Nissan green with 30% gloss. It was kind of an OD green with a satin gloss texture. We sprayed it with a HF gravity feed gun which did a really nice job for the cheap price it cost.
This was our first time attempt at painting a vehicle and the actual painting was quite easy. We used a auto primer from the same company that was made to go over paint, not bare metal. The hardest job was getting the surface ready for primer and paint. My son's CJ needed quite a bit of prep work.
We spent about $300 on primer and paint. A little more than some may want to spend, but my son liked the results.

I've got plenty of pictures in my album. Between body work, sanding, priming, wetsanding, building a paint booth, and painting...close to 30 hours. I used 3 quarts of Duplicolor Paint Shop paint, from Auto Zone, for $60.

Starting with reply 12, I gave a little rundown (ok fairly lengthy, lol) of prep procedures for another member. This method though timely has served me very well on my prior paint jobs (all of which were on a tight budget).
