I'm looking into going to see this in person, and I feel like it's a bit overpriced. What would be a good offer to make (assuming the thing runs well as promised). He sent some photos of the interior and it looks pretty good

If you feel it's overpriced, just keep looking, plenty of fish in the sea.

Well I do like it, and I'd like to make an offer. I'm just not as knowledgeable as yous guys so I thought I'd get a more professional opinion. I don't want to insult the seller by making a bad offer, but I also don't want to get swindled.

If most of you agree that this is a fair price, then that's okay with me too.

It all depends on the prices in your area. I don't know what Cherokee's run where you are at, but I would want that to be around $3500. $4900 seems kinda steep to me....

Thanks. Prices seem to be pretty standard in my area, from what I've learned here. But there are always people who ask for way too much, like this local post: https://pullman.craigslist.org/cto/5085884043.html

I'm not immediately turned away by its price, but there's a lot I don't know about it and your area. Is there rust? It's clearly lifted, so how was it lifted? What parts? The leaves look a little flat/sagged. Who did the work? How well has it been maintained? How was it driven? Does that moon roof leak? Who installed it and when? How is the interior?

When dealing with any used vehicle price should be the very last part of the negotiation. Pay a trusted mechanic $100 to look it over for you, that way you won't end up with an expensive lawn ornament.

Where I'm at one completely stock 97-01 with anywhere between 90k and 170k would be going for $4500-$5500 at a dealership if it was clean.

I actually live down in Moscow! That's a decent price so long as its as clean as it looks. It all depends on what youre looking for. If you're looking for a fixer than you can find them under $1000 around here. There are quite a few that have already been lifted and are in alright condition for around $2500. And then for a super clean stocker will be between $4000 and $5000. If you're willing to wait there are a lot of deals to be had, I bought mine running and driving with everything working for $400. Good luck!

00/01 are no problem if checked out. If they have been taking care of it- the car is proven good for 150k miles.
$4000 would be a fair price to me

I like that idea real well.

Many negotiating points can come up for that $100......

Nice! I'm in Pullman. I've been searching for a while, and a lot of nice XJs are coming up, but I'm being patient with the search.

I'm not against getting a fixer upper, I just don't have much experience so I don't want to get in over my head with repairs. But I would like something that I can learn to work on myself, that hopefully already drives well when it's purchased. I get unsure sometimes because I like this $4900 XJ just as much as some of the $1500 XJs that I have found.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I'll pursue this further and try to check it out this weekend (let me know if any of you know a trusted mechanic in the Spokane, WA/Post Falls, ID area who wants to make a quick $100).

Also, I've been warned about the head crack before, so I'll keep an eye out for that.
