Remove the door panel, fish the new door check in place and tighten the bolts, then just bolt to the door jamb.

not having a door check doesn't do anything about the door alignment. It merely help stop the door from flying open and damaging anything else. Putting one there won't help the door go back up in the original position.

My money is on the hinges.

Look if hinges are flush with the body or if it's starting to seperate. And check the welds if there's any cracks starting to form.

Look at the pins holding the hinges. Does it move when u close the door and open it? The holes might have wallowed a bit.

Does the hinges (the part that's welded to the body) moves when u open and close?

I only mentioned 'door check' because OP wanted to know what it's called.

Easiest way to find out where the 'slop' is; open door half-way or less, firmly lift up on bottom of door while watching hinge area. problem should be evident.
It's usually the hinge/sheetmetal joining area, however it may be the hinge pin.
