JK... with a 4.0L? Nope..

What you need is a 00/01 coilpack engine from an XJ.

Jk never had the 4.0 and tj 4.0s don't swap directly over, the casting is totally different on the block.

so 00-01 are the only years for a direct swap?

Yes, prior to that XJ 4.0s used a distributor instead of a coil pack. I'd find a 99 motor though, not much different of a swap and you won't get the faulty head.

i put a 96 in my 2000. swap the distributor with the crank/cam sensor that the coil pack motors have. just have to mess with it to get it right. on mine its turned almost all the way forward.it can be done.

any year 4.0 out of a grand or reg xj. just make sure you keep the stock intake/exhaust. and if you have a 00/01 xj make sure you get the 00/01 exhaust manifold. if you get the old style you will have a major exhaust leak.
i've already dont my swap with a 96 motor. everything is working great. havnt had it inspected yet due to money but if you have any questions about specifics just pm me. and ill tell you all i know on the subject.

Ok quick question to make sure I'm reading this right. I have a 01 XJ and I found a 4.0 in a grand that's a distributor motor. To swap the only thing I have to do is get the packs to bolt on and swap out the distributor for the cam sensor. I heard I had to change out the cam as well? My motor is done and the motor I found is a fairly new one for a song of a price. Plan to start this tomorrow afternoon. Thanks

Donor engine is from a 1996 ZJ. Will this work with swap of cam sensor for distributor fabricated brackets to hold pack rail, and use donor engine intake And exhaust?

use your exhaust and intake. off of the old motor. get the gasket for the old motor. swap the sensor that is in the side of the block of the old with the distributor in the new motor. i didn't have any brackets made for my coil pack. it is wedged in between the a/c compressor and under the heater hoses.

i am making tabs that will bolt into the valve cover studs and run under the coil when i get some metal. the bottom of the tabs will have nuts welded to the back of them so the coil will bolt in place. send me a PM about any questions. il will also include pictures if you would like.

The swap is done and its running! Took a little bit longer than I wanted but its done. Only other I had to swap was the coolant temp sensor in the water neck needs swapped. Other than that its an easy swap. I popped the head off the old engine and the head gasket was blown across 4 cylinders and there were two cracks in the head.
