Heh, yup, that's me. Just going over my overall list of things I want done to the XJ overtime. Rearranging the time frame on some stuff. The exo cage was a looks/practical thing. I think it'd be cool to have, and it'd also let me be more adventurous out on the trails without too much worrying hehe. I've always liked the cages, always wanted one, but I think it can wait lol.

 

I skimmed this thread to see if it was answered already, and I don't believe it was.

But I was looking at D&C's internal cage for the XJ. It's not DOM, but that option is available, I just don't know how much the price increases. But they have a 1.5" x 120" wall HREW cage for $450.

I have the D&C cage. Everything fit really well and those guys were great to work with. It's a good starter cage to add on to.

 

Oh nice, you have a 92 as well, right? Have you added onto it at all? Some NAXJA guys said just add some gussets and cross members and it's good to go. Does it eliminate any passenger/cargo space?

 

If I do that HREW cage, and I wanted additional tubing outside, what are some good hybrid designs? Or should I just do full exo with the internal as well? I wouldn't mind going exo when I get sliders, since I can tie it into my bumper, etc.

what are your plans for frame stiffening?

 

I like browsing Pirate from time to time. There's a thread there that sold me on those leaf sliders. If that internal is good, I don't mind getting it for like $450, then putting the rest of the money towards the exo. And I was thinking TNT stiffeners.

 

Sorry just now saw your questions. I haven't added onto mine yet, my plans are to add tube where the c pillars are and run a crossmember between them. Also probably add cross bracing (x's) with the harness bar and between the pillar hoops. And ofcourse gussets which i have a few already. I chopped the top on mine and I can tell it has stiffened it back up just like it is right now. I don't have a rear seat but it seems that it would be comfortable sitting if I had one. The glove box doesn't open all the way anymore though.

 

full exo's are ugly... and from what I've read kind of pointless.

 

Exos alone are pretty pointless, but I'd have a full internal and the exo would just be for added protection. I already have a stinger and a bumper that has more room for tying more tubing in. Maybe just front end protection? From the stinger, fenders, to the sliders?

Do you have a pic of your chop? I'm going to be very tempted to do some kind of chop or something to make me go topless. I'm thinking a retractable roof section or something lol. Is the glovebox pretty much useless now or can it open a bit? And you feel safe with this cage kit?

 

so you'd have a full cage inside your cage? I'm no engineer but that sounds pretty heavy and pointless overkill. sounds like you've got some more research to do

here's a guy who was proposing plans to do something similar to a cage inside a cage. iirc he re-did the plans and came up with a more reasonable design. read all the responses

The glovebox will open about 1/4 of the way before it hits. I thought about cutting it somehow for it to open around the tube. I've probably got a few pics, give me a minute to dig around on my computer. Honestly, yeah I believe the cage offers decent protection out of the box, but it would not do it more than once. It just needs more support, especially in the rear. From b-pillar hoop forward is pretty stout.

Damn! Very nice! So some extra support and gussets and it's a pretty good cage? I'm liking it a lot. Do you think gussets like this would be sufficient?
