i've never driven with a rear locker on the highway, but wouldn't rear permanent locker do horrible in slippery surfaces like going into a curve in snow, ice or even rain.

My 2500hd has a factory rear locker with thw tow package. While yes it does give you some scary moments if you are not prepared, you can more than compensate with a light foot and some carefull driving. And, when u get the hang of it their is nothing like hanging that *** end out around a corner with twin plumes of smoke pouring out the wheelwells!!!

I've ran rear lockers for the last 9 or 10 years. While you do have to drive a little different with them it isn't something that you can not learn. I would say the main thing is to have good siped tires, and don't drive like you are brain dead and you would be just fine.

I've read a few posts with your problems regarding the aussie. While your experience does give me pause, it doesn't deter me. It seems that you are in the minority regarding your problems, which makes me think you had something else going on other than a bum locker. While yes the first one could have been a bad unit, the fact that you tried a complete new unit and came up with the same issues when others have had so much success with this locker. Just makes me think you had another issue that was solved with the full carrier detroit. I've searched pirat as well as some other forums on this locker and 99% of the feedback has been posative. While it is the cheap route to go (lunch box). I'm running 31's and do not need a top of the line setup. For 240 bucks and a quick simple install in my driveway I am more than willing to take the chance. Thanks for your comments but I think I'm gonna stick to my origional plan.
Sounds like a plan. I read tons and tons of reviews as well about the Aussie and that is why I decided to go with it too. Unfortunately, my experience was not that great. Hope it works out better for you. One thing I can say is I can install one and disassemble one blind folded I have done it so many times... ha ha.

My XJ has open diffs,
But, my Bronco has a Detroit Locker in the rear, it will go most places and never consider dropping it in the 4x4, or even Low Range, the benefits of have a 460 pulling you around.
I would to have a locker or a Limited Slip Diff in the rear of the XJ. To bad more people and Jeep didn't make it standard option.

Its accelerating, that is the trickiest, because too much gas and your rear end locks and swings out, but thats also because I have wide tires...and they werent cutting through the snow/slush, like a narrower winter tire does.

Haven't you changed your diff fluid in those 6 years? (If not, remind me not to buy a Jeep from you.) If you did and you didn't add a LSD additive you'll definately know if you have a TracLoc from the sound coming from the rear during tight turns.

Not that it matters, but all my vehicles go to the shop for maint. I've got too many responsibilites to worrie about changing my own fluids. So no I haven't had the rear diff cover off myself. She is at 123k right now. Ill have the diff done again (3rd time since I've owned her) around 150k and ask the guy to check for an lsd.

Front or Rear? Yes. PowerTrax LockRite in both. Front D30 disco with PosiLoc cable system. Really convenient. Trans case is NP231 and I runner on the open road (in inclement conditions) for miles and hours at a time. (Don't run an NP231 continuous on dry pavement). Off the road the Peep shuts em up.
