Pretty much winches aren't for looks, if you're stuck and your choice is to use a winch to make it home or spend the night, it will look really good to you. A winch is a tool.

I had a Warn 9.5ti on my TJ. Luckily I never had to use it to pull myself out, I actually only used that winch once to pull a stranger out at a OHV park who had both front tires behind a large log and his front driveshaft broke. Honestly a static towstrap to help pull him over it would have worked fine, but I had never used the winch so I wanted to give it a go.

I agree with the comment that a winch can pay itself off with one use, depending where you wheel and how you wheel the chances of being in a situation where you need one vary greatly.
