The key word here in the warnings they give is "may" cause cancer, not "does" or "is known" to cause cancer. They don't know, it's not been proven yet to date and from my understanding as of current, there has not been one proven case of this happening yet in all these years since the warning was issued.
Please let me share a little example story about where these rumors originate, the dishonest state of California who has for many years now made great efforts to create an environmental economy based on failed false unproven dishonest science. It's all about money...
Back when I was about 12 Ca put out a warning rumor claiming that Milk "may" cause cancer based on a study thesis from Berkeley. Well without needing to say much more it just completely destroyed the dairy industry. So the dairy industry sued the state of ca and forced them to prove this rumor and statement. Well it turns out their studies supported the idea that it "might" cause cancer. But what they didn't share about the studies before putting out the warning was this... Milk "might" cause cancer IF you drink 30 gallons a day for 300 years in a row. They had purposely manipulated and withheld the true facts and full story about under what ridiculous unrealistic conditions would apply and even then there was no proof that it actually does.
Then what do they do? Come along just a couple years later and make the same claim about potatoes based on a study thesis from Berkeley. When sued for this claim it turns out they "may" cause cancer if you eat a truckload a day for 50 years. The point is all these ideals come from Ca and most have yet to be proven. And if they can manipulate the whole truth about the real world conditions they will. They make money from it. After keeping track of these facts for many many years now, I feel absolutely confident that there is not one proven case that used motor oil has actually caused cancer.
It was a rumor started from a study thesis written by some environmental extremist nut at Berkeley. Then the state of Ca decided it was an opportunity to bolster their new environment based economy agenda by forwarding the rumor and passing regulations based on this rumor. I watched it happen as it unfolded and watched it spread across the country for exactly the same reasons of opportunity.

Hobby wrenchers might not feel the need to wear gloves but if you've ever turned wrenches for a living, you wear gloves when you know you should. It's ridiculous that there's this notion that you're a sissy if you wear gloves. It's like the whole eye protection thing too. Well guess what? It's not cool when you get metal in your eye or even lose your vision. It's not cool to cut and destroy your hands. Bleeding and injuries are an inconvenience when I'm trying to get stuff done. I'll take a few extra seconds to find my ppe for whatever job I'm doing.
So to associate not wearing gloves with hobby wrenching might not be quite an accurate assumption.

What's worse is other states realize the opportunity to make a buck from California's example and follow suit fact or fiction. So far in my state of Az they use California's examples as what NOT to do if they want to increase and maintain our local economy.

I believe asbestos is known to cause cancer, heavy metals are known to cause cancer. Used motor oil has not been proven to cause cancer. heavy metals in used motor oil may cause cancer if allowed to enter blood stream. most of my years as an industrial mechanic I did not wear gloves. i still prefer not to wear gloves, If I have cuts on my hands I wear gloves or don't change my oil until my hands heal. just a personal preference.

And thank you for being patient with me Sir. I just have problems with some of these rumors without any factual support being perpetuated. At some point California is going to be put to task for these deceptions and in the meantime rumor should never be taken as fact, it encourages even more rumors.

With all due respect Don, Please let me share something about this. I have been reading those most of my life also, and have been in the repair service all my life, it's what I do, it's what I was born into and for many years owned and had two shops operating in California at a time. And there are indeed risks with other chemicals like antifreeze soaking though your skin into your blood stream but the used motor oil thing is a rumor based on unproven science and rumor.

What's the big deal about believing the science and warnings about these? It costs $20 for a big box of nitrile gloves that provide minimal safety. Yes, they are a hassle to put on and remove but it sure beats having to worry some ill health effects later on.

It is a big generalization to say to people not to believe the warnings on auto fluids/products based on two cases of erroneous warnings about milk and potatoes.

And when these are accepted without question they propagate even more deceptive false rumors. I cannot even start to put a dollar amount on what the used motor oil rumor has cost this country in permits, fees, production costs, handling costs, educational costs, and all the costs to comply to these stringent regulations based on a deceptive rumor.
Of course we shouldn't just be dumping it out in the field. But to lie about why we shouldn't is deception. Here's a fact for you... Because they have now regulated it so much and made it so hard to legally dispose of, a hundred times more is now being dumped in the field when no one is looking. The regulations themselves have created an even worse environmental hazard situation. And the "Cancer" rumor was the justification for all these regulations that followed.
And even though untrue it works for them and fits their agenda so they now try to do it with EVERYTHING, not just used motor oil. The cycle needs to be stopped before it breaks this country and we are all on foot or horseback. Oh wait... Horses are out too, they produce methane and ammonia. Don't handle them apples without gloves.

Now how much of a mess is this going to create in this country considering the air we breath is 78% nitrogen? Would they be silly enough to pass expensive regulations forcing businesses like tire shops to buy permits to handle it and install recovery and recycling equipment and impose very stringent disposal laws?
Absolutely... You can bet on it... There is no common sense in most of what they do based on these rumors.
