Default Is this a good buy? Please help!!!!

Hello all,

I live in Arizona and I have been interested in purchasing a Jeep Cherokee for a few months now. I found one yesterday, checked it out and drove it today. I would very much appreciate your advise and recommendations on this possible purchase.

It’s a 1995 Cherokee, 2WD, 120k miles, 4 door, 6 cylinder 4.0. The jeep is in ok condition, engine and transition looked and sounded pretty good, the jeep drove great. The paint and interior are in poor condition, the interior roof foam is failing apart, also when I took it for test drive, I couldn't put on the seat belt, the seat belt buckle wouldn't work. Seller was asking for $2,200, but broke him down to $2,000.

Do you guys thing this is a good buy? Thank you in advance for your recommendations.

$2000 seems kind of high if the paint and interior are in bad condition. That could be a sign that the owner neglected the vehicle and/or abused it. I would offer about $1000.

Just a bit of unsolicited advice, but look for a 4wd. My only regret about getting my Jeep is that it's only 2wd.

Thanks for responding guys!!
My main concern is the seat belt not functioning right, not sure how expensive or complicated replacing the seat belt buckle might be. Also, the fact that it’s a 2WD and not 4.
This current owner said he’s only had it for 5 months and selling it for a family sedan (baby on the way). He said the owner before him was a mechanic and took care of it well and that paint damage and the interior foam ceiling falling apart is due to the Arizona heat.
Well, thanks again for you’re responds, I was planning on meeting him at the DMV and picking it up for $2,000 on Wednesday, but now I’m not so sure about that.

Well, I picked up my 1987 4WD for $1500 and it is in dang near perfect condition... especially for being that old. (also in AZ, by the way, what part are you from?) I don't think $2k is realistic. IMO.

Oh, and for the record, when searching for mine, everyone said that the previous owner was a mechanic. So, horse$#!+ I say. Maybe if you are nearby, I can help you find a better deal.

I live in Glendale.
How many miles on that 1987 Jeep? I have been looking for a while, but just don't seem to see lots of them out there, I was all excited about this one and i think seller cought on pretty fast. I know I should have taken some pictuers, but didn't think of it at the time.

Its got 166k and the interior is pretty dang perfect. drives straight, solid tranny, 4wd, etc. a/c is almost fixed... I've been doing some little repairs here and there, mostly just for peace of mind. It runs great. Some of the ones that I looked at were heaps of crap and they wanted WAY too much for them. I'll be looking on craigslist the next few weeks to try to find another steal.

That is one I would consider looking at. body looks straight. it would be worth a phone call to find out which front and rear ends, details, etc. the other details I wouldn't believe unless I saw it for myself.

and this one if you could talk him down a little. LOW miles though.

Dont do it, I got my 91 with 167k and a new motor n tranny with 97k, and a RC 4.5in lift for 1100. Some similar issues Headliner was toast, tires were bald, and the ac's not hooked up. Also mines a 4x4 laredo power everything. 2k is to much for a nice 2wd cherokee. IMO 2wd cherokees shouldnt exist.. like the old wranglers
