Probably just a mod for that vehicle to allow more room for things like the police radio and other needed equipment. I am sure there are some guys on here with police mod XJ's that can chime in. But I am sure with the the floor shifter in place it did not make much room for what was needed.

thats awesome! it would be nice to have all that room to be able to build your own center console. or bet it would be easy to use the regular console, run the heat piping for the back seat, and add cup holders to where the shifter would be

Just what I was thinking. Maybe even try to mount an 99-01 console with the exsiting cup holders and mod the shifter area for storage.

They're a pretty rare option on XJ's and the fact that you've got one matched with the fact that you have a NP242 and a factory tire carrier makes your jeep pretty rare. If I were you id hold onto it. Ive only seen one other XJ with a collum shift, never a 97+ though.

Yeah, that's an option on the police packages. I have the police package, and have a floor shift (and have the window sticker to prove it lol), and from what I've read, the floor shift was standard, column being an option.
