HELP
I was going a maximum of 40mph down the local bypass, and suddenly there was an extremely large bang, then the Voltmeter dropped down to the minimum, the temperature gauge rose to the maximum point and i lost all other aids, such as power steering. the gearbox also did not sound too healthy as i limped back home. once i had got back home the cherokee just hissed, with large amount of steam emanating from underneath and through the front grille. It is a 1995 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Litre High Output, with 103000 miles on the clock. Up to this moment it was running as per usual. I have spoken to one person, and they think that it may be fan belt failure. Any Ideas?
what sort of damage should i be expecting?

Did you look under the hood to see if the belt is gone? Because that is what it sounds like. I hope you didn't drive very far with it overheating.

It was about a maximum of a mile. haven't had a look under the hood yet as it is pitch black outside. How big a job is it, is just as simple as replacing the belt.

Thanks for your help. will post some pics tomorrow when it is light.
Really want to keep it as it has only just been through the MOT and has been really reliable.
and it has been converted to run on LPG, so it is extremely economical, It is a real pain, as we are in the western midlands, UK, and have about 8-10 inches of snow, with more forecast. so it has been put to good use

its a snapped belt
super easy to replace
batt guage dropped because no powa to alternator
no belt to spin the power steering pump= hard steering
overheated pretty quick because no belt to spin water pump or fan
and if you tried using the a/c that wouldn't have worked either lol

Checked under the engine this morning and it is a broken belt, picked up a replacement at lunchtime today, hope to get it fitted tonight.
Fingers crossed this sorts the problem out and that I haven't damaged anything else getting it home, but won't know until I can get it running again.
Many thanks for all your help x
