Wealth is stuff, like cars, bridges, roads, tools, machinery, land, resources, etc. It is not dollars/paper. The government is destroying wealth in order to benefit the few. The few (corporate fat cats and financiers) make a buck for every ten bucks of our wealth destroyed. Basically it's a way to funnel our wealth to their wealth, with an efficiency of perhaps 10% or so.

I also asked a salvage yard employee about scrap metal information and she said that the President is having scrape metal dumped into the ocean to create more demand... Not sure how true this is, but according to the price of scrape metal, there would be no use to create more of it...
Hate to tell you this but they do its the whole purpose is to get rid of all the old ones and make it so you cant get parts for those who kept theres.

hard to kill a I6 even when you at a gallon of Sodium Silicate to the crank case. I would of bought that XJ for 200 as it sat and they could have saved the cash they spent on buying chemicals which are probably not to good for the environment. tsk tsk tsk..

here is an AMAZING article about how socialism screws everything up

An economics professor at a college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before,
but had once failed an entire class.

That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK,
we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan".

All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A.

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B.
The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy.

As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.
The second test average was a D!
No one was happy.

When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

The scores never increased as bickering,
blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.

Could not be any simpler than that.

I stand corrected. THey are allowed to part them out with the exception of the drivetrain which must be destroyed. Im assuming this means the engine and transmission so hopefully the supply of transfer cases and axles will still be there in the salvage yards.

With the exception of the engines being seized up, why couldn't the transmissions be sold at the yards. How is the government going to know what gets parted out of a certain vehicle? Are they seriously going to keep record of things like that? I think not. I understand disabling the engines, but why not let the trannys be sold?

AFTERMARKET INDUSTRY OPPOSES CLUNKER PROGRAM

As new car dealerships ramp up advertising to attract motorists to the showroom using "Cash for Clunkers" as an incentive, we anticipate a consumer backlash once reality replaces the hype and car owners realize that "Cash for Clunkers" is nothing more than a clever slogan for a program to spend $1 billion of our tax dollars to fund a government-subsidized vehicle trade-in to help new car dealers sell cars.
Consumers will soon learn that they are simply trading in their vehicles and will still have to jump through all of the hoops to qualify for and purchase new vehicles.
The much-heralded fuel efficiency and environmental benefits of purchasing a new vehicle could easily be achieved through better maintenance of an existing vehicle or trading up to a newer, used vehicle. Any savings from improved miles per gallon will be lost from the costs involved in destroying and disposing of the "clunkers."
We continue to strongly oppose "Cash for Clunkers" because it prematurely destroys vehicles with many more years of useful life, denying consumers more affordable, used vehicle options.
