anything bigger and you will have decreased power, trans will work harder and start to get warmer. save for the tire size you want and the CORRECT gearing for said tires

here are my post. nowhere do I say your tranny will undergo a thermonuclear reaction. all I said was lower MPG's and tranny will be hotter.

the trans wont get much hotter with a little difference in tire size. maybe if he was towing a 3500lb boat on 35s with stock gears i bet your statement would be true.

OP, nothing bigger then 32's. It my dog a little, but nothing crazy. I'm currently running 31's on 3.55s, and the only different I see is in the braking.
Haha i totally agree with you...if money was absolutly no factor and you wanted to run 32's and have it still be the same as stock driving wise, then yes you would regear...but i can assure you over 98% of people on this site never regeared for 32's...yes you will lose mpg's and the trans will shift differently then it did before...but im sure anyone who has an xj and wants bigger tires is not to worried about mpg's, so im sure a couple mpg's down wont be a problem...i have 32's on my xj with stock gearing, and it drives great, plenty of power, around 14 mpg, the only downer is it shifts down every hill i pull going down the highway..definatly not worth regearing.

xjbeadlocks, I'm not talkin' about going way overboard with it. I'm going to a swap meet soon and just gettin' an idea for what I want to look out for. I'll be re-gearing to 4.10's someday for like 32's maybe 33's, but being 16 I don't have a pile of cash laying around. And there's no way in hell I'm really concerned with MPG's, its a JEEP! With a Four Liter Inline Six! Being concerned with MPG's in a Jeep is like worrying about ride quality in one. And I didn't buy it for either of those reasons. If you'd like to buy me a Dana 44 with lower gearing so I can run 33's I'll be more than glad to give you my adress!!!

Look man, I'm not arguing with you. I have big tires on stock gears, and I do have worse MPGs then before. But, you are just making it sound like (or at least it came off like) his tranny is going to run 10-15 degrees hotter. It seems as though your post was misunderstood by most of the people that saw it. This is the Internet, sometimes it's hard to get a feel for the tone in which someone is typing.

Okay so lets not clutter up the new guy's post with a bunch of arguing. If you have a problem with someone, take it to the pm's.

88cherokeekid, you can run whatever size you want. Just like you can run whatever lift you want. But with the strength of the stock axles, you're pretty much limited to 35's. If you have a d35 in the rear, then i wouldent do anything bigger than 33's. As for the gearing, I run 33's on 3.55's. Its not un-driveable but it is also deffently not stock. For me, the sacfrice of power was worth running the bigger tires without regearing. I did add a tranny cooler for peace of mind. It says you live in cali. Theres hills out there right? 33's on stock gears sucks on the highway going up hills(espically mountains) but if your like 50mph and under its not too bad. Yes your mpg's will go down. They will go down with a lift and roof rack and all that stuff two. But its a sacfrice we make because lifted jeeps are awesome!

yeah I have around 4.5 inches of lift, besides that everything is stock. Like I said I'm going to a huge auto parts swap meet in SD this month and kind of getting an idea of what to keep an eye out for.

If you have 4.5 i would say 33's. What rear axle do you have?

He would be much happier with correct gearing... control is much better

New gearing would deffently be better. But as he said he's on a 16 year olds budget. I wish I had better gearing but for now, ill just enjoy my big tires and crappy pickup.
