ive taken mine on a 6 hour trip before on a 100 + degree day in the summer with only a slight overheating problem due to low coolant but other than that it was a smooth going ride and pretty comfortable like someone above said, if you love your jeep a little discomfort wont make a difference. As for camping and recreation they are amazing ive even slept in the jeeps on a couple of occasions. Get a cherokee!

Found this and checked it out yesterday
http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/cto/3029014564.html
The car is super clean and seems to be legit. Getting it checked out by a mechanic today.
2 owners, no accidents, clean title.
There is a small hole in the rear left bumper cover and the driver window motor needs to be fixed. It goes up and down it just keeps cranking once it has already reached its destination.
The price is somewhat negotiable.
What do you guys think?

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum and I'm looking at picking up a 2000/01 Cherokee primarily for use as a camping/recreational vehicle.
I've heard from some people that these cars aren't so great for long road trips. Rough ride/uncomfortable for anything longer than a couple hours. I plan on using this for trips that are as far as 6-7 hours away.
Just wanted to get your opinion on how these fair on such kinds of trips.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Late to the party, but...
I've driven my 2001 XJ between Georgia and Michigan a few times, 900 miles in a day each way mostly on interstates. Crosswinds will bounce you around, otherwise it's comfortable enough for me. Depends on what you're expecting.
I'm taking a 5000-mile road trip to Montana and back about a month from now. I have a 2002 Impala and a 2008 Civic available, but I'm taking the Cherokee. It's dependable for a long trip, it's got room for all my camping stuff, I can nap in the back if I need to and it's just more fun to drive. At the end of a full day of driving, it's as comfortable as anything for my 50-year-old 5'10" 200-lb frame.

I drove about 8 hours and everything was okay. Can't say I am an experienced driver, no, but jeep is rather good for long distances I guess, especially if you plan a route beforehand huh.

I have the sport with the most basic seats that are pretty beat down. I drive it 80 miles a day, and love taking road trips in it. While the seats aren't "comfy" the ergonomics of how I sit in the vehicle is pretty comfortable for long periods. 96s are loud compared to any modern vehicle, but I knew that going in. So I don't mind. My kids like it, not too picky. The wife...meh. Not her favorite, but our camping trips are normally in the 1-2 hour driving range, so she doesn't mind it too much.

The seats are rather comfortable in comparison to many. Sure there are more comfortable seats but they’re fine for me. That and the loudness. The wind and engine noise is a lot more than in any newer sedans and whatever. By no means is it too much but if it were being compared than it would be noticeable. A set of wind deflectors helps a lot for highway driving or in the rain with the windows cracked.

The longest one-day roadtrip I've done in any XJ was 13 hours. That was when my 99 was still stock. I then made the same trip, with fewer side-adventure stops, when it was lifted on 31" retread mud terrains and full of all my personal stuff to move. Loved the experience and would do it again in a heartbeat.
I've made a few 10+ hour trips in it ever since, each in a progressively worse state of civility too. When set up correctly (i.e. suspension and driveline), these things can really rock a highway. Wind and road noise is really my only complaint, but that's not really the Jeep's fault. They're aerodynamically stupid from the factory.

I did a 3500 round trip from Salinas CA thru Washington/Idaho and Whitefish, Montana last October. My Cherokee has a 3in lift, 31's and new Bilstein shocks. The ride is stiff, but that's ok with me! I went thru some mud on Highway 2 thru Western Montana, snow and rain. It takes all that like a champ! It will NOT ride like a Honda. It's a truck! I drove 7-8 hours a day and got almost 20 mpg. I have seatcovers that have padding, so they were comfy and helped with the back. Get out and stretch every 3-4 hours! I do wish it was bigger, as I like classic cars/wagons and that is what I drove a few years ago, but had to get a newer vehicle and picked the XJ. Do it! These are very dependable 4x4's and though they aren't a Lexus, that isn't what you buy them for! They go anywhere! I got compliments from a lot of people on mine, especially in the Northwest and Montana!

I love traveling with mine. I use it for "overland" type travel and use it as a big metal tent when camping. It's comfortable, capable, and since I'm short makes for a good bed haha.
