How many miles can a cherokee sport take?

I got my XJ with 190,000 miles on the clock. Knowing how these engines are, I didn't flinch. It's now turned over 226,000 and is still kicking along.
The Jeep 4.0 and Buick 231 are pretty well the most indestructible engines on the planet.

260,000 ish on a jeep that probably hasn't had a working odometer since the P/O got it. Transmission is junk but the motor seems strong (ba10/5 meh). It really depends on how it was cared for over the span of it's life. All the stuff bolted to the motor is what falls off and breaks and wears out.

My XJ has 278,000 on the original drive train, in pothole NJ no less! That ole straight 6 banger keeps on getting on. Like most of the 4.0's mine now has a crack at the exhaust header collector. Makes everyone look over at it until the header heats up and the crack closes. Went through inspection like this, and NJ inspection is a real stickler with exhaust and emmissions. By the way, it's a 1998 Sport in classic green. I was trying to sell my 1999 Suburban and the guy who came to look wanted the Cherokee instead! Made an offer that made me almost cry to say no to.

There's a thread around here about mileage and there are a bunch of 400K plus XJs.
As people have said, lubricate it, be nice to it and it will last for ever.
Mine isn't a good example since I only have 83,000 kilometres or so on my 01 which only about 50,000 miles.
Starts in -40 sitting outside for weeks without running, works much better when I drive it and it is great at hauling my other toys.
I figure mine will out live me!
As to Hyundais, I put roughly 70,000 kilometres on a 13 Accent and 68,000 on my 13 Sonata Hybrid, current one I am driving and 148,000 on 09 Santa Fe with no major issues. A little suspension work on the Santa fe at 98,000, all warranty with no problems, one hybrid part replaced the first day on the hybrid.
Other than that no issues.
Quality and value has been excellent with all three vehicles and if I was shopping for another car they would definitely be on my list!

Absolutely right.

This is the highest one I have ever heard of. There is a local one with over 400K on it, but I don't think it is still using the original engine.
I bought mine with 170K on it, no worries here.
I consider the Jeep 4.0L to be one of the most dependable engines ever made, right up there with the Ford 4.9L straight six and the Toyota 22R four cylinder.

Set the bar high.
Peep is rollin 726000 km, 450000 mi.
24/7 all weather, all seasons.
How many new vehicles did I tug out and boost this past winter??
Once it hits the million, new objectives will be selected.
This was a XJ rescue. It had been stolen, and recovered, probably it's 1st "recovery" experience. Put into soccer mom duty, and then Gramma taxi. Handed down to a teen age son (cringe) who I am sure never abused her. Sent to duty as a northern quarry work jeep. Explains the two hour pressure washing to remove the pit run silt. When the quarry crew was done with her she was sent to be a back woods taxi at a hunting camp. Rescued from behind the wood pile with 316Kkm on her clock.
Original 4.0, never touched the internals. Sure Alt, water pump, seals, gaskets, rear main seal, oil filter o rings and repeatedly the rocker cover gasket and a replaced harmonic balancer.
Original power steering pump, had 1/4 Lucas top up about 200Kkm ago.
New oil and filter every 7 - 9K km will keep your 4.0 rollin.
Original AW4, change the fluid ever 7500km, the trans filter every 150000km, running a trans cooler. Rear trans seal (output of transfer case) every 250,000km.
Original D30, disco with posi loc controller. Change the fluid yearly. Original inner carrier bearings and ring and pinion. Change all other external pinion seal, and U joints every 100 - 150000 km. Keep em greased. The SKF wheel bearing hubs have 410+K km on em and still going. The upper lower ball joints need replacement (were new with the bearing hubs long ago).
Double cardigan on front drive shaft has been rebuilt, 200K km since.
New chain in the original NP231, keep the Dexron type fluid level up.
Rear drive shaft, new universals as needed 100 - 150K km
Rear D35, yes the original Dirty5. Original ring, pinion, and carrier bearings. Change the fluid yearly. Outer bearings and seals about every 150 - 200Kkm.
So your basic drivetrain is solid. The extent of abuse you put to it will determine your actual service intervals.
Your XJ is maintenance free, they can't be fixed. However, service to your XJ will be required, and since they last so long, will be repeated down the road.
Rust is an ongoing battle, so the less you have to start with the better.

The 2.5L in the XJ is very reliable too, since the 4.0 was essentially built from it.

Bought my 98 Sport with about 170,000 and its sitting around 225,000 now. Still runs good, just gotta keep replacing the broken ****. Finally had to do the water pump last week.
