Default i need help please help me

ok so i bought my 85 cherokee about 2 weeks ago..the guy said the only thing wrong was a broken 4 wheel drive..i figured i will fix it sooner or later...i dont need it right now..
but i was able to drive it for about a week then all of a sudden it stopped working..it would work if we got a jump for a cpl days but now it wont run at all it try's to start but cant click over..
so i had the battery checked and its still good..
had the alternator checked and its fine to..
so i had a friend look and he said it was the starter solenoid so i bought a new one and replaced it..but it started smoking when we tryed to turn it on...and now i dont know what the problem is and cant afford to take it to a shop and have it checked out..please let me know what u think it is..all help is greatly appreciated..
also u can write to my email..

Sounds like a nasty short some where, I probably would try jumping the starter itself. (w/ ing. key in on position) IF it starts & runs. you know it's shorting form the starter back. (Approx. 6ga. wire & alligator clip, On the hot post of starter. Touch it to hot battery post) I prefer not to be under them when they start.

pull the starter and bench test it. Also check the flywheel and starter
for bad/broken teeth, but first you could try turning the motor over by hand
(put a socket on the crank and see if it will turn).
