Reno Nevada. Out west. Close to California without all the taxes and gun laws. Great seasons. You got Lake Tahoe if you like to fish, camp, hike, ski, etc. There's a good mixture of city life an outdoor lift. Got the casinos and clubs for 24 hour food. Best thing 45 minutes out in any direction will get you get you out of town and wheel/ explore anywhere

I live in Southern Oregon and think it's great! Lots of places to go wheeling within just a few miles. Some of the political stuff sucks but we are a pretty popular retirement spot so health care is one of our biggest industries. I'm a computer programmer for a health plan and have been there for nearly 9 years. I live along I-5 so I can hop on the freeway and head north or south pretty easy. However, if I didn't have so many roots in the current area, I'd be tempted by something more rural, away from the highways and more towards the coast. Although the coast is only 90 minutes away as is.
As for the climate, we have 4 very distinct seasons. Summers generally have a week or so of 100+ degree days and winters probably have a few little snow storms a year (maybe 5 to 10 days with snow on the ground) at lower elevations and usually only a couple inches. There are a million things to do outside and thus tourism is one of our other big draws.
Oh, and we have a ton of breweries.
Personally, I've visited lots of places around the country and I can't think of a place I would prefer to live.
One other thing that is SUPER important to me: Oregon does NOT salt their roads in the winter. I don't fight huge rust issues on vehicles I own.

I'd go back to the Islands. I spent two years living/working in the lower Bahamas and US Virgin Islands (St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines) They had beaches, crystal clear water, mountains, forests, etc... I hated having to leave.

I actually live where I want to live....I moved from Chicago to Denver about 10 years ago. Colorado(Denver area) is a great place to live.
Weather is great! We get all four season without brutal below 0 temps in the winter and no humidity in the summer. Sure, it snows here in the winter but it usually melts in a few days. 300+ days of sunshine! Also, no real natural disaster threats here (earthquake, hurricane, etc)
There are tons of things to do here: skiing, hiking, offroading, etc. Along with having the mountains and all of the things to do there, Denver is a great metropolitan area. Denver has all major sports teams plus several minor league clubs. Traffic has gotten worse in the past few years but it is no where near what it was like in Chicago. General "cost of living" is relatively cheaper compared to other large cities.
Not only are there tons of breweries in the state, weed is legal here! I don't partake but it is driving the local economy through the roof!
I guess the only other place I would consider living would be Hawaii but I think I would miss the snow!

While There is allot to hate about California, I can't see me leaving the state. I currently live 2-3 hours from everything a person with a Jeep a boat and a Motorcycle could ever want. Mountains 30 mile east, Pacific Ocean 100 mile west, deserts 100 miles south-east, behind mountains, Los Angeles and San fransisco 4 hours drive, Las Vegas 6 hours, Moab about 12, Rubicon 4, 2.5 to Dusy. So I would move about 30 miles due East of current Home. That would put me at about 4000 feet elevation in the mountains. Basically right at the snow level line.

So my fiancé and our two girls ( 9 and 7 ) are looking to move from lame IL. We currently live on the boarder of IL and WI, it pretty much SUCKS here. The summers are hot and humid as hell and the winter is brutal .
A little about us, she's a nurse, so she can work anything. I work for a technology sales company as a Microsoft Licensing Specialist and in reality my job can be done from anywhere. We're both pretty lucky in the fact we have jobs that make good money and are flexible. I am pretty open to where we live, I moved to Portland Or for 4.5 years and with the exception of the rain it was nice. Her on the other hand would prefer to be somewhere warmer ( CA for example )
I'd love to be close to the county so we can do outdoor things more often. The closest legal place to wheel in IL is 1.5 hours away ( Cliffs ) and there's the Badlands in IN and that's 3 hours away.
Just looking for some ideas as to WHY you love where you live, so we can seriously start to narrow down this search. I think it's safe to say, we'd both prefer to be WEST rather then EAST. She's lived in FL And not very fond of it, and she's also lived in CA and LOVED it.
So folks, what say you?

I live in arizona, and I have to say of all the places I've lived... its darn near perfect. Our summer suck, but they don't suck as much as most people's winters. I would rather lay under a fan then have to shovel snow....
But if I HAD to move somewhere, I would move back to holland. Lived there for two years, and it has a special place in my heart.

Ive lived in Michigan all my life. Grew up downstate and moved up to the U.P. 5 or 6 years ago. The trails up here are everywhere, not to mention the power lines that are everywhere. I could only see myself moving north, west, or both. It would take a lifetime to see the whole UP though, so i don't have any reasons to leave.

yup
I feel your pain, however Shawnee has trees & hills & shade, try livin out on the flat where you can see the curvature of the earth.
I was just thinking, July 2, harvest is over & its starting to get hot there, time for red lighting & thunderheads, that is the one thing I do miss about Kansas, the huge thunderheads & summer storms. Everything else,--not so much.

I used to think the same thing... Then I moved to the Vail/Avon area for a year. Sure I skied every weekend during a record snowfall year, did a few day trips to Moab, ventured into the San Juans and actually did Holy Cross, but I was ready to come back to Kansas. The locals I worked with were great people, but the tourists and seasonal workers were a pain in the rear. Maybe I would be singing a different tune if my wife got to come with me or I was in a more middle class community.

Been living in Washington for about five years. I'd rather live in Spokane than Seattle, where I currently reside. If I had the funds and ability to move, Montana, more specifically Missoula area.
