Nope, sent me to the bar. All I have to do now is tell the fiance we're eating spaghetti this month.

No visible damage, guess it's all internal.

I'd get a second opinion if possible. That's a hefty price...junkyard transfercases typically don't go over $200. Labor can be a few hours...but still, $950 sounds like too much. Then again, i don't trust any mechanic.

you're getting it with no lube and not even a kiss afterwards....

For one, I feel like he's ripping you a new one. $200 tops for a JY t-case and maybe $100 for all new seals and fluids. that leaves $650 for labor. I just looked it up and the book calls for 2.1 hours to replace it. Looks like he's trying to charge you roughly $310 an hour.

secondly, how would a broken gear in the t-case cause your transmission to mess up?

Sounds to me like you found yourself a scam artist. It's people like him that give people like me a bad name. If you were closer, you'd be looking at a $125 transfer case, ~$100 for seals and lube, and $105 labor at my shop.

Sounds fishy. I don't see how hitting a hole, could cause a gear in the transfer case to fail, which makes your tranny to mess up. Sounds to me like a "Junkyard Transfer case" Is a way to cover up the fact that he wont actually change yours, and you wont question why it doesn't look different.

I agree that sounds incorrect on his part. Do you have experience with this mechanic?

I've been there before for some minor things, had no reason to think he's not honest up until now. Called 3 JYs near me and no one has an NP231 spline 23 for my manual I6 95 XJ. Mechanic says this is a rebuilt transfer case with warranty not a JY pull, my mistake. Checked online and didn't find a lot of better options, this company is selling the same thing for $700+

http://www.midwesttrans.com/NP231_new_transfer_case.html

Mechanic is quoting $630 for parts and 3.5 hours labor at $90

Believe me I would rather not be dropping this amount of money on a repair but it's a DD and I don't have a lot of other options at this point.

a broken gear in the xfer case wouldn't affect where the gears hit in the ax15. take the top off the trans. unless the entire transmission is shifted because a mount broke or something, it's shifter related.

I get t cases from the jy all the time for 75$ install is about an hour really that is way too much for a 231. Even fully rebuilt. For 200 olus a 754 case you can have a nice jy t case and a sye installed if you can works pliers and a socket wrench
