I remember hearing all of these:
In 1984 the XJ came out.....Jeep is ruined, a unibody car....will never survive off road....what are they thinking.
In 1987 the Wrangler YJ came out....real jeeps have round headlights, what a yuppie jeep, it will never be able to go off road....what are they thinking
In 1997 the Wrangler TJ came out....coil springs on a jeep...can never be as rugged as leaf spring...will never handle the abuse off road....what are they thinking
Now the xj is beloved and has proven to be capable and durable, not ruining jeep. The YJ, has been used and abused everywhere off road. The TJ proved that coils are possibly more capable off road and handle the abuse....what is jeep thinking??????

But those where in house ideas not "let's rebadge something and call it a Jeep."

This isn't a KL thread where yes it's an Alfa, but Jeep designed a lot of parts and sytems.
This POS on the other hand is a Fiat 500 with some KL powertrain parts and theories.
Not like when the XJ came out

NOT DEFENDING FIAT FOR TRYING.......
Point, our beloved XJ was based on the Eagle platform(Gremlin,Pacer,AMX) which in a round about way was loosely based on a Renault car from the 70s', and we all know what great vehicles Renaults were...LOL
The XJ had a shady start too, but that fiat thing is an abomination I'd rather have an ARO.

It looks like the "Jeepster" is tailored to a specific market and I wish it success for the greater good of the company.

Just a thought
Lets take this "pregnant mini ", let FIA homologate it for competition, form a team,& take it to DAKAR. If it preforms well against the Peterhansel-BMW minis & Robbie Gordon's Hummers, then we can call it a Jeep.
Until then its just an "F***ing Italian Attempted Transportation" or FIAT, better known as " Fix It Again Tony"

It's not just demand but government safety, emissions, ect standards that burden manufacturers from doing specialty vehicles. CAFE fleet standards are why Jeep can't build Jeeps anymore (though Fiat does seem to be hell bent on ruining it more than they have to and even more so than Chrysler did) and **** like the 2014 Cherokee, Compass, ect have to exist in order for them to be able to produce the Wrangler still. Those same standards are why they had to kill the TJ along with the 4.0 and make the plastic monstrosity that is the JK.

Thats why I could care less what a person drives. I drive a 00 cherokee because it works for me. If you drive a yota, hummer, whatever. Good for you.
Lets wheel
Why drag cherokees down the road of HD. "that ain't no Harley!"
I think not. I left high school almost 30 years ago. Don't want to go back.

LOL - right on holycaveman
I reached that stage (I actually lived long enough to collect some Social Security) where I just went back to a US manufactured vehicle ('14 GC diesel).
Obviously I'm not emotionally invested in this discussion about Jeeps being 'real' or not. Like caveman, the decision to buy a certain vehicle has everything to do with my perceived needs. The last new US car I bought was an early 90's Cherokee - before that it was a '67 Mustang. For me it was always an issue of quality. I don't miss the days of buying a new domestic vehicle and keeping a list of all the defects for the 1st dealer servicing (final assembly after sale?).
This emotional attachment to a brand is something I'll never understand. I've ridden motorcycles for almost 50 years yet never owned a Harley. I used to own Nikon camera gear, now Canon, but I have a hard time understanding the irrational discussions on forums. I'm a believer of 'voting with my wallet'. If a manufacturer isn't making what I want I'll just find a different manufacturer. There are still plenty of choices in the world.

Agreement
Boy, do I agree with Caveman & CT,. My only stipulation is that it's made in America,I still believe in the American Dream & that the USA will always lead the way in innovation & quality.
Show me a 1940 Honda, Yamaha or Suzuki , maybe I'll change my mind but I know I can put my hands on a 40s, Harley or Indian. Same w/ Jeep, Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Plymouth, Hell even an ol De Soto (wow just showed my age) Point is I believe there will be XJs for a long time to come, that is if they aren't all cut up for rock crawlers, But , Hey, they will still be out there.

You must be referring to Wal-Mart and outsourcing, and the concentration of wealth into the pockets of private individuals filing taxes in Dublin and banking in the Bahamas?
Which is why the US currently ranks 5th place (and declining) in overall global competitiveness, and quality of American STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is 52nd place worldwide? Did you know that there are more foreign students studying in U.S. graduate schools than the number of American students, and over 2/3 of the engineers who receive Ph.D.’s from American universities are not United States citizens?
The America you're thinking of was divvied up and sold off a long time ago.
Anyway... what does this all have to do with a Fiat lol
