The cherokee XJ could never pass current federal safety, emissions, fuel economy requirements, not to mention current mass consumer desires for on road comfort and electronic features. just trying to meet safety guidelines would increase the weight by probably 60% and would reduce the interior space to nothing OR make it a fat bloated thing that would hardly fit on trails.

Emissions and efficiency compliance might come from a 5.3/6L80e swap.

The worst thing to happen to cars in general was the EPA.
For Jeep it has to be Fiat taking control. and we have the Cherokee/Fiat 500 just about the same.

AMC was pretty much on its last legs when the XJ was designed and built, so it should come as no surprise that corners were cut. Funding and technical lead for the XJ project actually came from Renault.

Yeah. Chrysler actually fixed a fair number of things in the '91 redesign, but it's still a hunk of crap. I can't believe anybody signed off on the headlight circuit.

It's pretty much the way headlights had been done on domestic iron for decades. At least that particular problem is easy and inexpensive to fix.
