You are not going to find a front D44 that will bolt right in, except for the D44 out of a Wrangler Rubicon.
The factory rear XJ D44 is hard to find. I haven't found one yet. If you want a bolt in axle, 8.25 would be an upgrade over the D35. Or if you're willing to do a little work, a Ford Explorer 8.8 rear axle is a great upgrade.
For gearing, what engine do you have, what transmission do you have, and what size tires do you want to run?

XJs never came with a D44 front.
The only D44 that you could bolt in to an xj would be a TJ rubicon 44..which are stupid expensive, and harder to find.
The rear dana 44 is getting harder and harder to find. For the price and trouble of finding a rear xj 44 you might as well just buy a 29 spline 8.25. The 44 is marginally stronger, and the 8.25 can be had cheap, and are easy to find.

- spring perches
- shock mounts
- lug pattern
- steering
- axle width
- brake system
- axle shaft availability
- vacuum disconnect
Any or all of the above things may cause you problems, depending on the jy axle. I've seen d44 axle builds on here that have taken months.

I think you may be overly simplifying things. Consider with a front d44 that is not already modified for an xj..

Guys can't seem to give away XJ 44 rears around my area.. There's one with 3.55's for $100 and another with 3.73 for $150. I'm considering picking one up just for the spare shafts.

In my limited time offroading I've only seen 2 parts break and it was the same part both times. Front axle U-joints and ears. I hear it's pretty common. Axle shaft upgrades from RCV or just a heavy duty U-joint type. Or just have spare shafts with you. They're pretty easy to change.
