I wouldn't buy it right then and there. Give it a once over and come back here and tell us what you saw. Take pictures and document other things you have questions about.

All I can say is I wouldn't buy from you then. I don't know you, your friends, or family. How do I know you guys are trustworthy...

I don't see a big issue of taking it to a mechanic and leaving it, it's not like they're cracking the engine and trans open or anything, they're doing a general inspection. I look at it like this, if you want to make the sale, and have nothing to hide, then meet the buyer and take it to their mechanic. Is it inconvenient? Maybe, but if you want to make the deal, and truly have nothing to hide, I don't see the issue.

If giving a potential buyer peace of mind is an inconvenience, you don't really want the money...

I agree here, and I will also add, there's things you can do on your end too, they sell test strips for coolant that detect exhaust gases, brake fluid test strips, and so on. Again, know what you're getting into, and go prepared.

Sounds good. Maybe I'll look into some test strips for the coolant and take them with me

Thing is it may not be cracked now. But there is a high risk of it happening eventually. Just me but even though I could do all the repair work myself I'd pass on it. I wouldn't limit myself to just a '99 though.

Whwt others years would you suggest? I'm new to the classic/sport family haha don't know all their corks like I know other vehicles

You'd be missing out then

I'm never in a rush to make a sale. I know what I have and it'll sell eventually. Don't feel like I have to give peace of mind to anyone by inconveniencing myself. If i tell You, you can bring whoever You like to see it, do you still think theres something to hide? You can get your peace of mind by bringing your mechanic to me haha.

I buy and sell quite frequently. Many people do ask to take it to a mechanic. Never have, and have never had issues selling anything quickly. Most also do bring someone after I tel them I won't take it but they can bring whoever they want. I was just saying that it's not a red flag imo if the seller at least let's a mechanic COME with the buyer. Just sharing my opinion and experiences so far.

I guess if it works for you that's fine. Just saying not everyone is honest. I know what to look for, so mechanic not needed, but not everyone can say that.

General consensus seems to be '98 and '99 XJ's are most desirable. Myself any year except the '00 and '01 would be worth considering depending on their condition. A far quirks go besides that 3031 head there are none that are that extreme. Unless body style is a preference look at all the other years and see what catches your eye. Any questions or concerns just check in here.

Something like this is what makes me nervous due to the rust, those rockers are shot. What are the options for something like that. Spent my entire life in the south so this is all new to me lol

Really Thinking about it now, I honestly can't even remember a potential buyer saying they'd pay for the mechanic? I'm sure someone has but I don't remember off hand. One older lady said I had to pay for it one time when I said I knew one that coukd come and look at it for her because it was mine haha. But a lot of shops charge a minimum of an hour and most are like $80+/hr. Some will charge less, but it'll still be over $40. Honest question to everyone. Are people really willing to pay that much for something they may not even buy? Just asking because this convo has the assumption that the potential buyer will pay and in my experiences that hasn't been the case most of the time. I mean you still have to pay for a mechanic to come out, but most don't charge shop rates. At least from the ones that have come to see my vehicles i sell.

let me ask you since we are discussing mechanics haha....would you do repairs needed or would you take it somewhere? Because if you aren't comfortable doing the work yourself, replacing rockers coukd cost you what they are asking for that jeep.

Oh yes repairs done by me for sure but I've never had to deal with rusted rockers before so that's what makes me nervous

As you said in your opening post you don't want a bucket of rust. Chances are that it's worse than the just the rockers. Bad spot in front of the driver side flare. Stains on the drivers floor could mean floor pans are in trouble. I can't do body work or know any close friends who can so I would have to pass it up.

Yep you're right I absolutely do not want a ton of rust and that one is not something I want to deal with.

This one looks a little better but it's hard to tell from those angles
