Locker paranoia!

rubicon and fordyce here in california. fordyce you pretty much need lockers and 35's I'd love to see you try to follow someone through that trail
you cannot call short arms and stock shackle angles finely tuned. what exactly did you upgrade on your suspension anyway?
this was my stock xj going just as hard as yours. I just dont see what you're saying. as long as you don't pick we-todd lines these xj's will take you surprisingly far

The whole point originally was not to spend major dollars. There are ways to take your stock suspension and fine tune it pretty darn good. Good enough. I could care less if its long arm. We are not spending the dollars to do that. If we were we would have lockers, bead locks, etc.....
Its simple advise that works. Get your suspension working/flexing nicely without spending major dollars with un-nessasary upgrades. You will be amazed at how much better it will work. I know I was. Perfect example is an fj with locked rear and power track front had to really work to go the same places I went. And two hills he could not make. Just because his suspension was not letting his truck work. Plain and simple.
Here is a wrangler with 35's locked front and rear going up a more difficult line(although it looks easy) Took him about 5 attempts to make it. You can see my jeep in the back ground. After he made it to the top I tried for kicks. Didn't really think I could make it but I always try. With the help of spotters, I made it up. Took just a little longer for me. But because of my tire size my diffs were dragging on about every rock sticking up.
Here are a couple other rigs going up.
I am not ignorant as to what a hard line is. Nor the capabilities of different trucks. But I am here to tell you what I am saying is very true if you apply it. Take it for what its worth.

My point was your daily driven xj with out lockers can be quite capable with tires and tweaking your suspension to let the truck work.
What was your point?
If you don't have lockers you are a loser?

No offense at all but its not even close. I can set my front wheel on a 37in tire. For a narrow track thats pretty good. And I am not rock crawling. Its meant more as a expedition rig rather than a rock crawler.

I've wheeled in a stock jeep. I've wheeled in a lifted jeep, open diffs, I've been stuck once because of no traction. Both rear tires were on the ground. The tire on loose ground dug a hole and I couldn't get out. Had to be winched out.
So far, I have not had any issues in similar situations with lockers.
I've seen a stock FJ roll. His suspension had no flex and he was a poor driver.

Simply no way you did some of those obstacles with that small of a tire. You'd be high centered. Specifically the 4th and 6th pic. You must have gone around them, or taken them at a severe angle.

This obstacle is called excaliber. The fourth and sixth pictures are the sword, the tough lines. Took about 15 minutes of spinning and thrashing to get these two jeeps up it. The smaller locked wrangler and myself went up the handle. Easier but still tough enough that many have rolled and not made it. Its the same hill. Just the handle is left of where the green jeep is sitting instead of going straight. You still have to navigate some large boulders and ruts.
Its just hard from the limited pictures I have to get a clear picture.
And I was driving not taking pictures of myself
Point being it took several tries for the locked wrangler with 35's to make it. Big rocks! And I made it, but it took a little longer. The problem was not my open diffs. But rather dragging them LOL

Shoot with my open diffs I can still continue forward with two opposite tires hanging in the air. There are ways around open diffs.
I just have a slightly modifed xj. But from others I know with high dollar suspension and lockers they are NOT going anywhere I can't. Or maybe they are scared of it who knows?
Lockers are great, have at it. Meanwhile I will be right behind you with a winch in case you have trouble......as soon as I get a winch! LOL
I would like to see the locker only trails you boys are talking about And dont forget to add the picture of your daily driver. Otherwise take your arguments to the ego forum
P.S. The only thing stupid about this thread is the amount of arguing about lockers vs everything else. It was not intended this way.
It was originally to encourage wheeling even though you were not locked. Read up on stock suspension tuning for flex get your truck handling well and be amazed where you can go
Here is my xj. Nothing special at all. But it works. Stock shocks, re packed leafs. And some other things Its not mr flex, but its enough.
Its a work in progress. picture before re-worked leafs and shock mounts.
The trucks to the right and left were wheeling with me. Both on 37's both locked front and rear. End of story.

When that FJ rolled, I came up on it with two open jeeps trying to pull it back over. They were on a hill pulling up. All their tires were on the ground but they couldn't get traction because one wheel was on some loose terrain and was just spinning...

What I think is funny is that I see more people who make a big deal about lockers and ARTICULATION than lifts/tires. In that they think if you don't have one or both, you'll never make it over anything bigger than a speedbump.
Of course people talk about lifts/bigger tires, but they just talk tech. Not that only a fool would ever leave the pavement without lockers and longarms

The first thing I did when I picked this jeep up last year is install tow points front and rear. I also bought an HL jack, chain, two tow straps and a 50ft cable. Along with clasps, portable air compressor and all that crap, spare tire, etc.....
Then I lifted it, etc...
I wheel alone all the time. Actually mainly by myself. But I enjoy it more with others. Thats why a winch is next on my list. The high lift jack works, but its a lot of work.
Last time I went by myself I tried a hill that was beyond my old tire capabilities(swamper truxus). Slid backwards against a tree. Too steep to go up the hill. Couldn't go down because of the 2ft tree. Lucky I pack a large triangle hand saw. Took 30 minutes but I cut the tree down so I could go home! Also blew a bead that day, I carry rachet straps to re-bead them.
Wheel and learn

Round these here parts its all about lift and tires. I actually get a little crazy on hills so I like it low and strong.
Everyone has their own preferences.

Not a valid comparison between locked vs unlocked.

Dude I was just busting his chops! LOL
I know anyone can roll over. And tons of locked rigs have failed, and made it. And........a few un locked
Just messing around. Its most always better to be locked. no doubt.
