My d30 was a little less than 1k with gears, locker, truss, sleeves, gussets, cover. I can still use my steering. I can still bolt it right in.

Ya gotta remember there are more rigs that are taller than they need to be with bad suspension geometry and other haggardness than there are well built rigs out there.

Now take a 38" bogger weight 84lbs. Take a 32" skinny tire weight(40lbs) like I run. times by 4. So its basically like my jeep running dual wheels on all 4's.
Huge difference in power output. And some of these hills you can not crawl. You have to shoot up and drop over the top. Some you just have to have a ton of wheel speed. Gearing brings your ratio back to normal, but does not compensate for lost hp.
I just won a mud run a month ago. Class was 4 and 6cyl up to 38" tires. There were purpose built rigs there running geared and locked. Boggers and tsl's. I only paid for one run. Won by a second. You can not turn a heavy bogger nearly as quick as a light agressive skinny tire. No way no how.
Just saying big does not always fit the bill. I am happy so far with 32's. Now if I move out west and start running over house size boulders, maybe I will go big

There are plenty of near stock engine xj's out there on 40+ inch tires that don't have issues with power. Its all about being built right

Well my damaged spartan is holding up great in the front. Wheeled this weekend and was not easy on it. Did not miss a beat.
Here is the damaged spartan locker that I am currently running. Should be a great test.
With exploded carrier. Spartan still going strong in new carrier.

how did you break it again? I read in one of your threads that you were driving around town in 4x4 on dry pavement
or did I just skim read that and fill in the blanks with my imagination

I was driving around on dry pavement, yes. That is not when it broke. I was off road when it broke. However I had three things that were(i believe) the cause.
1. a bad wheel bearing
2. a locked up axle u-joint
3. Possibly a cracked carrier from my broken spiders.
I removed the damaged spartan and it still is holding up great in a new carrier.
So I have fixed all the other problems, and the spartan is working fine even though it has some damage to it.
