Locking Differentials? What?
So after owning my '93 XJ with the 242 xfer case (and automatic tranny)for several years and enjoying it, I came across some websites and YouTube videos about the difference between part-time, low, and high, and I'm really confused.
1 - Does anyone know a GOOD resource that explains these differences?
2 - Should I have a way of "locking my differential?"
3 - I did get stuck this summer in the mud. Wheels just kept spinning. Would a locked differential have helped?
I'm handy, so don't mind looking at anything, taking it apart, Just don't know what all this new infromation means.
THank you!

1)
2) not if everything is stock
3) were all 4 wheels spinning? If so then no, you were stuck. If only one wheel per axle spun, then a locker may have helped.
There are ways to use certain lockers with the 242, I don't know for sure which ones though. I have heard people say that auto lockers are fine, I've also heard people say you can only use a selectable and only in 4lo. I'll let someone else chime in here...

The transfer case shifter does nothing with the differentials.

I've been in situations where my front locker absolutely helped me out and I've been in some where my locker was useless so you need to determine if you need one or not by what terrain you usually drive in and how you drive. If you get a front lunch box style than plan on your jeep popping around sharp turns and handling like crap in snowy conditions. You could get a rear locker and leave the front open diff if you ever drive in snow. Not sure where you're located so nor sure what would help you out more
