Any small block would be really cool. 302 would be the lightest and still make plenty of power for a wheeler. You can easily make 350 fwhp with a mild 302 and easily 400+ if you spend the money on a 331 or 347 stroker.

I have the stock efi 302 out of my mustang sitting in the garage just begging to be put in my cherokee. Only thing that stops me is I still want to run 6 cyl classes at mud drags and hill climbs.

I was thinking Chevy 4.3 would be pretty cool. As bulletproof as a 350, still a 6cyl, nice and short so it can be set way back in the engine bay and they can make pretty decent power with Vortec heads and a mild cam.

Just my opinion.
those vortec motors are great

I'm just saying that's what I'd like to do if I went diesel build it to be able to handle a big motor like that but I would like some ideas on a motor swap has any one done a 302 swap

Oh yea they are. Many people don't realize how good the heads actually are. They are the best flowing production sbc head of all time. Even better than the big valve (2.02") "fuelie" heads of the old days. Not only are they better flowing out of the box they can be improved on easily with a little simple porting on the exhaust side.

Local guy swapped in a 5.0, bored it to a 306. He says it a love hate relationship. The power is nice, gas sucks, sound is nice, price to get it prepared for that engine sucked.

the only issue I've seen with the vortec motors is the intake gasket....about 120-160k, they develop a leak, but about 6-8 hrs in the driveway your set....i've done 2 and its really not too bad

What about one of the new 3.8s out of a JK? Its small, lightweight, as good on gas as a 4.0 and has more power. Just have to get an older 3.8 TB and computer to eliminate the drive by wire crap.

Fun stuff. I don't know why they mentioned that it weighs 1000 lbs less than the liberty and then mentioned gas mileage? That's the exact same numbers I get in my liberty.
