Is My Jeep Ready For Off Roading?
So far I have on my 2000 Jeep XJ,
3 Inch Lift
NEW 30" Good Year Wrangler SR-A tires with spare
Front tow hooks
Rear trailer hitch, and adapters
Metal fuel tank cover (+ another similar metal cover near near the front end? Forgot the name now.)
Essential camping/off road gear, First aid kit, folding shovel, general tools, zip ties, duck tape and a few various nuts and bolts. And has is general maintenance in on the schedule
So with just this, can I go on any sort of trails? What should I be able to expect to do, I mean for instance I could easily do a gravel road, but I don't expect to go mud bogging in it.
So far I think, I will need, on top of this.
Differential cover
A cheap winch, with a winch mount, how much is the cheapest and most moderate setup I can run without it being complete crap?
CB radio and antenna setup
Anything else important I should add on it, before I check some places out?

Just go out and explore. find a buddy that has a simliar capabilities and if something happens just pull the other out. i have a stock 2wd xj with hooks and a hitch and bfg a/t's and thats it. Also make sire you have 2 tow straps. Thats just in case

Yes you are ready to go wheeling. Cannot stress enough that you NEVER go 4wheeling alone. A lot of guys get the mentality that their rig is set up good enough to go wheeling when they can go alone. NEVER go alone. 4wheeling is great fun to share with friends and friends are a great insurance policy. You've made a great first step by getting on the Cherokee Forum. Now, just do what I do. Keep on punking the guys in your area to go on 4wheeling trips with you.

So I've been thinking about this same thing. I am building my jeep a bit and want to wheel some, but none of my friends have trucks. I am sure I can get someone to ride with me, but not another rig. What do you all recommend in this situation....stay home? Is there a place to meet up with others to do some trails?

If it has the name "Jeep" somewhere in it, it was built to be off road... From the factory they are capable, and worked on like yours is, you can go many many many places. Just don't go alone, have some good recovery tools, straps/ropes, shovel, hi-lift, common knowledge, and some buddies.
The biggest variable here is not how capable your rig is, it's how well you know it and how much offroad skills you have.
Take it out and learn it, learn it's limits, and then have fun.

Just be careful, don't do something you might get stuck on, just have a little fun. If you got a winch and some trees around or anything, you'll be able to get yourself unstuck if you really really need to.
Like I said before, have good recovery tools, and good shovel can save your rear end...

I dont think its a huge deal to go alone like without another rig but you always at least want a buddy or two riding with you and if you arent with another rig have a come-along and chain, and strap just in case. And also, for any kind of wheeling you probably will be doing with your setup the stock diff covers are probably fine, unless you really wheel the crap out of it.

Or just put them to work and get unstuck, hehe.

RenoXJ, I hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question but, do you live in or close to Reno Nevada? The reason I am asking is that I will be heading to Fallon, Nevada in a couple of weeks for work. I will be there for a couple of weeks and I'm driving my XJ down to do some wheeling in the local area during my off time. I would love to try the Fordyce Creek trail or anyhting else in the local area. Didn't mean to highjack the thread. You could just PM me with your answer I suppose.
