I have no doubt that the new jeep is a decent suv. And with the lockers it would come in handy at times.

It's never guing to be a hard core rig. You know this also. Old jeeps can easily be made into off road monsters with little money invested.

They are what they are. Under certain tests the new jeep I believe would beat the old xj. But under not so polite of tests, the old heep would have the upper hand.

If the new jeep was pulling upper 30's in the city. I probably would own one.

simple test.. stock vs stock.. those 2 models. we all can say what we want, but until we side by side these 2 rides hitting the same trail we truly wont find out..

its 2 different breeds and talking about what one will do if you do this to it and that to it.. does not qualify as a valid test.. we want that UP Country as it came off the lot.. no disconnecting anything.. its gotta be straight up.. after that.. what ever and we need to video it..
we want to see if any of this tech garb has improved jeep or not.. thats the plan.. so no mods.. OEM suspension NEW is allowed due to age and wear and tear.. you tracking?
im free all next month.. any weekend ill be glad to meet up and Windrock Park In Oliver Springs TN, a fellow jeeper from WVA and i may possibly link up with his XJ for snitz n giggles just to get the ball rolling and some trail time..

i have went places in my KL this past month that my 96 sport wouldnt go up..
i aint trying to sell ya one.. but i will give honest details. unless you drop the sway bar.. granpa will have a challenge.. its impressive for what it is..
as far as mpg.. in the cityunless imin sport mode with foot to floor. my 4 banger averages 21 lead footing it.. if i roll at 50-68 in 3rd gear on back roads..well it dranks the fuel.. highway i been seeing 24 - 29 and it is not flat here.. i cant speak for the v6...
also..my xj went where my cousins wrangler wouldnt go..this was weird. and his wrangler went some places i couldnt.. lol.. cant explain that logically.. at all. so now we must find out where the KL stands..and so far..its jeep enough for some tough stuff.. needs rock rails though..

If you think the Fiat PigBody can outwheel even the lowest base model Cherokee on any mountain trail then make it worth our while to find a stock rig or restore a modified rig back to stock configuration.

Title for title on paid for rigs(someone will spend $4000 getting their rig back to stock I'm sure).

Or better yet come out to Colorado and try some of my trails. I see stock XJs on the trail every once in a while and I am sure you will find a challenger who will lead you to a wealth of spindly IFS breakage and high centering and use the salvage money from your Trail Chicken to buy a set of Tons and a Coilover setup for his sad stock XJ after it runs circles around that rolling suppository.
He just wants someone to do the side by side comparison with for fun.

All this banter is a waste of electrons.

Metalwonzero is offering his KL, which he is willing to wheel hard, to do this.

Somebody pony up.

The reason you can't find any takers isn't because of a problem running against you its just about everyone that has an XJ is because they wanted to modify it for off road. Why????? they make an awesome off roader and can carry 5 people along with cargo. The other is an abundance of parts available for them at a reasonable cost. The stocker should be allowed lockers front and rear also to be fair.

Mine was bought as a toy but can still be a DD if desired, I have a 04 GC "Overland Edition" for that or a 2013 Lincoln Town Car the wife drives most of the time.

Be real if you do find someone with a stock XJ let them pick the trail to be fair and then see how that goes. You hand picking one isn't fair at all, go to an off-road park and run the same difficulty trails till the other can't do one the other did. Make sure you do have a water (creek crossing) 2-3' deep and some deeper mud thrown in with the rocks and creek banks to go over.

A third party, not in the challenge, should pick the trail/lines. Someone neutral.

So here's the scoop...just joined, just bought a TH because the bone stock 96' XJ with a 4 banger and a 5 spd I bought 2 years ago for 1K gets me through more snow/mud, and up more 2 tracks in the hills than I've been able to go before (never owned a jeep before). I'm a wildland firefighter & I do know a thing or two about making vehicles do things that they're really not meant to do on a daily basis.
Additionally, just got 8" of snow & 40 mph winds. Both rigs got us out of a 1/2 mile driveway plugged with 3'+ drifts (yes, the wife and I did a side by side for the fun of it...she's a pretty cool chick The TH did it with a bit more style and comfort although I'll have to pay somebody to fix it when it breaks / the XJ plowed through with less finesse but I care about it less and can/will fix it myself.
Just to add to the fun, my brother in-law buried his chevy k2500 (that he's happy to abuse) to the axles today while deer hunting. The TH not only got to him, but with much humiliation pulled him out, to the road, and to the shop.
I wish I had known about Jeep 20 years ago!!! As long as it holds together, I'm a TH fan!!

A k2500 will get stuck anywhere its ifs no front ground clearance and no option for a front locker.

I'm sure this will actually happen someday. I am curious but I wouldn't be surprised if the new one wins. Stock XJs are not all that great... they make a great cheap platform for modifications... that is their strength to me. I can destroy mine, find another with a blown engine for a few hundred, swap parts and be good to go. A stock FJ will certainly beat any stock XJ so I dont see why the TH couldn't.

I hope the new one becomes modified in the future but looking at other IFS vehicles, it either wont or it will be super expensive. To be honest, I would rather buy a FJ but I'm holding out till Ford comes out with the new Bronco they have been whispering about for years. With the wrangler going to IFS, the renegade being a panda, FJ being discontinued, Cherokee being what it is, the market will soon be thirsty for a decent 4x4.

I will always have an XJ... Wouldn't mind getting into something a little more fancy someday though lol. My wife has purchased a Tacoma, a few classical cars and an XJ for beating up in the winter while ive had the same XJ the entire time... I just cant find anything I want lol. maybe a JK?

This is the latest Bronco update... looks like they actually made a concept!!

Being in East TN, I'm inclined to buy an up country, do this, and then sell it. Someone find me a stock example and let's do this.

Somewhat serious...

I've heard rumors of GM building a vehicle to compete with the wranger. I am excited and worried at the same time. GM has some great stuff, but ALWAYS finds a way to **** up what could be a great thing.
