Wait till they go on holiday.
About 37 years ago I pulled down the motor from my TX 500 to do crank up rebuild, (po had also routed the timing chain incorrectly). had almost completed the reassembly when ma and pa kettle pulled in the driveway, home a day early!
Didn't see it so clearly then but there seemed to be some problem that I was using the dining room table for my workbench.
Lots of excitement and I was doin the 100 yard dash with a full twin cylinder engine and tool box. After the dust settled the bike ran so sweet. Never left me home alone again and I had to fix everything that broke round the house from that point on.
Your mom and dad planning any trips, do they have a table?

Many moons ago I had the same issue. I kept dragging $50.00-$200.00 junk cars home to tear apart and fix. My mechanically inclined parents would freak out until one day I was able to diagnose their car and fix it. After that it was a free for all and when I finally got my licence I had a pretty decent bank roll from buying and selling and a decent knowledge of how to repair cars.
First you need to make a game plan (write it down), show the costs (everything parts, oil, anti freeze, EVERYTHING), then if you have a mechanically knowledable friend willing to help you then bring that up, give them a time line of the project, and talk to over them in a professional fashion and listen to their concerns about you taking the project on (don't get defensive). Bring up that this will give you confidence in being able to take on large tasks and see them through to the end.
Stay professional and don't fly off the handle like all teenagers do. Also whatever you do if they do let you do this project...........finish it no matter what.
