Default New XJ - What's up with the speakers?

Hi All,

Got myself an XJ, and the stock system is pretty bad. What's worse is the front doors have speakers, but there isn't any cut-out for the speakers.

Anyone come across this before?

Also, the dash has tweeters, but I can't figure out where to get replacements.

I'm looking at Infinity 5 1/4" for the hatch, but wonder if I can fit 3 1/2"s behind the dash and just unplug the crappy door speakers.

Anyone ever done something similar? I'll be getting a new HU at some point too, but the speaker thing is my first battle.

Thanks in advance!

Generally speaking, the bigger the speaker, the better it is going to sound. Those shin-blasters in the dash are a pretty poor location, in my opinion you're better off in the door.

Do you hear sound coming from the doors? I'm not that familiar with different years of XJ, but I know that my 95 has little square vents in front of the stock speakers in the door. It's entirely possible that on earlier versions they simply perforated the chip board and put carpet right over the opening. That's what we call stealth

Regardless, the doors are going to be your better location, 5.25's will be OK, but 6.5s would be better if you could fit them. I'm pretty sure you could just cut a hole through the door card, and then with a small spacer mount the 6.5's into the 5.25 hole.

Well, that's the weird thing -- there are speakers, but it's solid chipboard in front - no perforation at all! I thought it was just stealth too, at first.

They work, but it seems like someone forgot something when they built this one! I wouldn't mind keeping the stock look. Any idea where i can get the OEM speakers, or doorcards with speakers?

Well, you said you have the oem speakers, they're just firing into the door card. What you need is an OEM doorcard with a speaker grille on it. There's a couple routes you could take :

1. Get some factory speaker grills from the junk yard and cut a hole for them. I think they just press in

2. Just cut a hole

3. drill holes from behind stopping short of the carpet (will still be stealth!)

No matter what you do, the object is to make some airspace for the sound to travel through the door card in front of the speaker!

Or you could replace the stock junk-o's with something reasonable and mount them from the front of the door card.

That's exactly what I need. I've been looking, but nothing yet. Next option will be cutting the hole, but I'd rather avoid it if possible.

Thanks for the suggestions!
