And I'm okay with that. I know once I get an XJ a lift and tired are in order. But the thing is spending money when I have it, as opposed to my car breaking down when I don't have the money.

XJ's are alot more reliable than both of the vehicles you guys are talking about, BUT like any other vehicle, they have to be maintained. Without tender loving care all machines die. XJ's are cheaper to work on and easier than most vehicles out there. But when you buy a jeep, you've not bought a vehicle, just made a down payment on all the accessories, lol. And trust me, a set of mud tires are not cheap! Now, I'm gonna make at least a couple of people disagree with me again, lol, but here it is. Most newer oils don't have enough zinc in them because alot of new motors use rollers instead of flat tappets. Older motors like your ford and these xj's have flat tappets that require an oil with zinc in them such as valvoline VR1, or a zinc additive. Like I said, alot of people will disagree with that but when I put my comp cams extreme 4x4 cam in my 97 the paperwork said the warranty would be void if I didn't use an oil with zinc in it at least for break in.
This is understandable also. Every car needs maintenance, and love and care. Once I have an XJ I know I'll be doing an oil change, plugs and wires, and if I can't find a 5 speed, I'll be flushing the trans fluid also. But once the basic upkeep is done, I'm hoping I can get a few good months of solid driving out of it before anything goes wrong. What I'm planing is have the Jeep come December/January. Do said maintenance, and hopefully it will last through the rest of the lovely Michigan winter. Enjoy the heck out of 4x4. Then come spring start replacing/upgrading

Cool. Take someone with you, have them start the truck, and saw back and forth on the wheel while you look under the front end to watch for worn steering/suspension components so you don't end up with an unexpected death wobble (all solid axle 4x4's are subject to this). Make sure it doesn't overheat, or smoke, or knock (I think the slight lifter tick was installed from the factory, but that isn't a knock, lol), check that the transfer case goes easily into 4 low and back into 4 hi with the clutch pushed in or the tranny in neutral. When you test drive it, listen for a clunk when you accelerate or let off the gas (U-Joints), have a look at your fluids and make sure there's no milky stuff or anything out of the ordinary, and you should be good to go. These may tend to complain a little when they're behind on maintenance, but I've never had one leave me stranded.
