I'd go with spot or driving beam on roof & put fog (wider beam) on bumper.

It depends on what you do.
Do you do more high speed driving where you need to see things long before you contact them?
Do you do lower speed trails and crawling?
You can also angle the outer lights so they give you more side wash and keep the inners focused far ahead.

I went with 4 spots because I have 80/100w headlights and I needed something that would provide light past them. I have two facing straight ahead and 2 that shine out toward the ditch(deer spotters haha). But as Gee oh Dee said it depends on what you are going to be using them for.

its slower trail, i decided to go with two wider beams on my bumper for a start and go from there
didnt want to spend alot of money on lights until i figure out how want them set up so went to walmart and picked up these

i know they not the best of lights but going to give them a shot mounting these on my front bumper towards the end of it if i like them then will get another pair mounted up and will prob go with a narrow light for the middle two
also i know 55w isnt the best but gotta start some place

IMO, if you're gonna go with inexpensive 55W lights, go with the driving lights as they'll project further than the fogs. To be honest, my fogs are pretty useless unless in soupy fog where you can't see 50' in front of your vehicle.
The inexpensive 55w driving lights don't have as good lenses or reflectors as the more $ units, so won't put out as much light and not in as well of defined pattern. They should be fine on the front bumper for trails and rural driving.
I have PIAA 520 ATPs on the '96 Sport and downgraded them from 85w to 55w because they were insanely bright, as in too bright for the public roads. I also have a set of Hella 500s with the stock 55w bulbs, and they aren't in the same league as the PIAAs, but don't cost even half as much. The Hellas are OK for the $, and work fine as auxiliary lows on my '96 SE. The PIAA 520s have a wider beam pattern than a "driving light" but really put out a lot of light.
Don't put fog lights on your roof unless you just want to illuminate your hood.
I'm thinking of getting a pair of A-pillar mounts and adding a 2nd set of Hella 500s to the '96 SE.

Mix it up
I use the ambers for wide lense spread, the clears for longer pencil beams, silverstars for the basic day to day, go ahead and give yourself a mix. Remember to power them thru relays and 10 - 12 ga power delivery and grounds, this lets your switches live longer, each light can pull 4 -5 amps.

Not from the Wally, got them here at Cdn Tire store, Blazer brand, probably pretty much the same as the Walmart brand/construction. $36 pair here, 55watts, can get a chrome housing, I get the plastics, roof have been on three winters, no rust, I change the bolts to stainless when fastening on. Drilled thru the stock roof bar to mount, ran dual feeds and dual grounds. Yes there are better quality brands, with these cheaper lights I don't sweat it when they get busted. Need more light, I go with volume. Remember to power thru relays. I run fused feeds right from the battery to my relays, 10ga wires. I do see a voltage drop at idle when all on but no problem when rpms come up. Just like a set of phasers, really lights up the scene.

i want to eventually go on the roof and either gotta make another bar like what i have for my rack, just got some brackets from 4wp and 1x3 cross bars the cut to length for them or use part of my rack for the light bar or take the rack off completely but then would have a place for my jack and shovel
