Ah, so you jerk and stop? And then if not freed jerk and stop again? And again? And again? And again? Just to avoid using 4lo? I wouldn't call that smart at all. I must be really off base.

HMMWV do not have open diffs every HMMWV out there has a Torsen LS front and rear. Its a gear driven LSD which is why brake torque will get them out. Brake torque doesn't help with actual open diffs.

No. 99% of the time when someone gets stuck where I wheel at, you can't get enough traction to just pull someone out you have to build momentum and jerk. If I don't get it in a couple tries, out comes the winch.

that pissy little rope isn't gonna do a damn thing. get yourself a proper ******/recovery strap. you need a good run and jerk him out using your momentum. look into the procomp 3x20.
you can also try applying the e-brake (about half way) on the wrangler. this will stop the free spinning wheel to send the power to the other wheel that is just sitting on the ground doing nothing, (the one with all the traction). this is how the brake technique works when you have open diffs.
