Please help me pick between jeeps!
Hi, I'm new here and I need some help.
I have to make a decision to either keep my jeep or sell it and take my fathers.
My jeep of 7 years is a 96 with no features at all. 122k. great condition except i was told it has some oil leakage and the water pump may go out soon. cost of repairs 900
OR
My fathers 2001 loaded. Heated leather, sun roof.. everything. But it has 190k (all highway) Only he and his brother owned it and took very good care of it. I was told something about a u joint (I'm a girl who knows pretty much nothing about cars.. pardon me), an axle, and the power steering pump going out. 800 in repairs.
What to do? What to do?
Oh, and if I take my fathers, I'd like to put my tires on. Mine are slightly larger than what it came with. Can those be put on the 01?
Thanks guys!

Take your fathers it sounds like a nicer ride. Your wheels will bolt right up to the 01 but if theyre bigger like 33's or more and you have rear end issues id get that fixed first. Post up some pics.

I think you should get the 01 and sell the 96 for cheap to a guy like me so he can beat on it

I'm just worried about the 190k. Are things just going to start wearing out? And idk if it's the way the door is set up, but the 01 feels a bit cramped. It is very nice though and I'm getting tired of saying "hey guys, could you lock the doors?".
the 96 repairs says:
replace water pump and serpentine belt:
water pump
serpentine belt
antifreeze
$414
Replace oil pan gasket, oil filter adaptor o ring, rear main oil seal, service engine oil and degrease engine:
rear main
oilpan gasket
adapyor o ring
5w30 oil
oil filter
675
labor 768
parts 322
supplies 50
tax 28
total 1168.. little higher than I remembered.
This is the same place that charged 353 to put in a new starter (the oil was leaking on in)

Honestly, I think taking the gamble is worth it. The newer Jeeps seem to me to be much nicer in and out and the engines put out more power.

Oh and my dads 01 check engine light is always on. I think I remember him saying it had to do with a sensor, and I know he had to take it in and have something disconnected to make it turn off so that he could pass inspection then hook it back up. ??

Lower miles, less electrical stuff to fudge up..May not be as comfy but youll be happy with it in the long run. Water pump is nothing, serp belt..nothing, rear main..eh kinda a PITA, but not expensive or a death wish, oil pan..easy..All the parts for this is prolly 200 bucks, thats oil, filter, and antifreeze included. And could be done in a weekend.

4 votes for the 01
3 votes for the 96
I also just remembered that he just put on new brakes and he put the left on the right and right on left : / He was too frustrated to redo it. Is that bad? Don't laugh.

190K miles for a jeep is not bad you can push it to double those miles and more if you just maintain it. Also stuff breaks on jeeps hell i dont think my jeep has ever ran perfect and i keep mine maintained. You should go with the 01 especially if your not a gearhead.
