take the interior out of the 01 and put it in the 96 there you go good as new lol

no but for real i would stick with the 96 bc of the lower miles easier stuff to fix and your not wheeling it as of now from what i can tell. plus i bet that checke engine lght is on for the abs or the coil pack is crapping out and once the coils pack goes out then its never the same i know a guy that is on his 4th one. so deal with crappy interior and and some cup holders there is plenty of mods on here for that and if you were close to me i would say bring it by and we could have those things done in a weekend and a couple cases of beer lol

Just do what feels right. It's up to you. Drive your dads for a while and see if you like it more than yours.

I wish I could. It's out of state. I'll be there for Christmas, which is when I need to make up my mind so I can drive it back. I'll be able to spend a couple days with it then.

I do remember it idled low and made that annoying low rumble sound.

the 96 repairs says:

replace water pump and serpentine belt:
water pump
serpentine belt
antifreeze
$414

Replace oil pan gasket, oil filter adaptor o ring, rear main oil seal, service engine oil and degrease engine:
rear main
oilpan gasket
adapyor o ring
5w30 oil
oil filter
675

labor 768
parts 322
supplies 50
tax 28

total 1168.. little higher than I remembered.

This is the same place that charged 353 to put in a new starter (the oil was leaking on in)

Read this and figure it out yourself before getting on the rear main seal kick.

I'd be looking up ABOVE first, and VERIFYING the source of the oil leak YOURSELF.
Everybody, who doesn't own or have to pay for or perform your vehicle repairs, loves to poke their noggin UNDER the Jeep and come out bearing the false bad news that your RMS is leaking.
Many mechanics, friends, and good old Uncle Bob seem to enjoy telling you it’s the rear main seal. Has a catastrophic ring to it, doesn’t it?
A simple leak at the back of the valve cover or other source could produce the same symptoms. You don’t need to be a mechanic to figure this out. If you have good eyesight and a dim flashlight, you’re good to go on your own. Don't jump on the RMS/oil pan gasket bandwagon right off the bat.

Almost any oil leak on your 4.0 is gonna drip from the RMS area for two simple reasons.
First off, the engine sits nose-up and any oil will run back to the RMS area. Secondly, the RMS area is also the lowest point on the engine. Simple physics and the old plumber's adage apply here. "$hit flows downhill".

Valve cover gasket, oil pressure sending unit, oil filter adapter seals and distributor gasket, in that order, have to be eliminated as possibilities first.

^^ That's kinda what I thought when I had conoco put in some more oil before a lengthy drive and right away said the ___ was leaking. You can see it on the new starter already.

I'll be cautious about repairs if I keep this one. As for the water pump. They pointed out a noise that indicated it was going bad. That noise was there when I bought it 7 years ago... That being said, I'm in a Denver forum looking for a mechanic.

I just need to decide which car I want!!

RE: mechanic,

I have worked with Autotailor (1701 High Street Denver, CO 8021) for my Subaru for over a year now and they have been very good. A little pricy, but honest. They recently had some issues with my vehicle and ate a bunch of labor and parts cost to make sure it was remedied.

I also just met with the guys at Hillside 4x4 (near hwy 36 and I-25) today to get my cherokee an alignment and have my steering looked at. They came recommended to me by a friend, it's just a couple local guys with a small garage shop. So far I'm very happy with them, very friendly and know their stuff. They'll be regearing my axles in a couple weeks.

First off, either one you choose. Go to your local chapter of this place and Naxja.org

They will be able to help with most if not all of the repairs.
Your mechanic is ripping you off with some of those estimates

I would go with whatever one you would the most happy on the trip back home
