Ha, not really the place for dune flags due to remoteness, no one around this time of year, and the fact that 99% of folks in that area would not attempt a dune climb for the fun of it. But I sure like doing it.

oh lol.... his picture was a little deceiving. Thought it was like a "big" dune like in Cali or Baja.

Thanks for the help Steve. I am new to wandering the OBX and have been relying on Steve for good info. After reading your reply Basslick, I was about to PM Steve to ask what a dune flag was.

I am new to wheeling and have been as cautious as I can about trespassing, damaging land/trails needlessly, and not being a jack *** in general.

I don't have a build thread. Im a bit computer illiterate. I entered it into the COTM competition this past month, so there is some basic info on it there. PM me if you are interested in any further details. I have done my best to keep it low buck using quality parts. I work in fabrication, so I have built what I can. Thank you for the compliment.

I had to look up OBX, didn't realize it was Outer Banks ) I have an uncle living in Petersburg VA. Looking it up on Google maps I am wondering if you can drive down the coast all the way from Virginia Beach to Ocracoke? Google Maps won't show a route through Currituck Park, are there public roads through there and False Cape to connect Virgina Beach down to where highway 12 begins? If so that would be an awesome road trip.

What part of OBX are those dunes located?

My XJ just won't handle anything but backroads 55-60mph so it would be a two day trip out from here in western Ky, but a week away cruising through the mountains and down the shore would be a welcome refresh about mid May

Default OBX = obnoxious

^ Just south of Virginia Beach is Sandbridge, then Back Bay wildlife refuge and False Cape state park to the NC state line. No public vehicles allowed in the refuges. Bicycle, hike or kayak/boat in.
From Virginia you must drive around through inland Currituck and then back north along coastal Currituck.

The pavement ends in the town of Carolla and NC Route 12 continues on the beach to the towns of Swan Beach and Carova Beach. About 12 miles of beach to the NC/VA border and the southern end of False Cape state park.
Pictures are from Carova or Swan beach. The houses are behind dune lines and some of the paths over the dunes are challenging.

I drove past that container today Steve. Those are the trails off of Munson Road, around about mile marker 19 right?

It is a two hour drive to where the road ends from my house. If I could drive through Sandbridge it would be about 30 minutes.

Just something you put on the front of your Jeep so people on the other side of the dune can see you're over there and don't plow into you.

Gotcha. Definitely not an issue in the OBX this time of year. I haven't seen another vehicle on the trails yet.

That really looks interesting. I imagine it would be a nice week exploring from the north down to Ocracoke, then maybe a ferry ride back to the mainland. If I get better tires I might just try it, just have some Wrangler Radials on it for now so I can drive it to work
