8.25 + More modern yet still timeless interior and exterior + cupholders + OBD-II (Yes, I actually like it) + just being newer = Win.
But I'm still a sucker for an old Sport or Limited.

i enjoy the simplicity of my RENIX, but the upgraded interior of the newer models is definitely a plus i wish i could have. i actually don't mind OBD2 either as i've worked with it a bit. too bad they cut the MJ in 92....

I hate how the 97+ have the the bumpers and fender fairs all the same," color as the jeep its self. it really takes away from the xj's depth and curves.my wonderful 92 xj is white with the silver trims and gives the jeep a lot of character.in my opinion.

I like the '97+ better because of the cleaner look it has. But I will never have a 2000 or 2001 because of the head issue.

I believe it has a lot to do with the trim level model, plus the other options ordered. My '91 Limited came with all the bells and whistles. (except sunroof) Leather, Premium sound, Tow pkg., Winter pkg., Mono colored paint pkg., Mirrored privacy glass, factory fog lights, Key less entry, Delayed headlights, Entry illumination, Full size matching alloy rimmed spare, etc. etc. I especially like the vent windows. And at 70,000 miles right now. I wouldn't get rid of it for nothing. It's still a baby in it's life span. Attachment 130429

Thanks, I inherited it from my mom, when she passed away in 2008. She owned for approx. 14 years. And didn't really drive it a lot. It was her summer up north vehicle (northern Wisconsin) So it was at 62,000 miles when I got it. I only changed out the stereo, Headliner, and swapped the headlights, over to HID's. Trying to keep her mostly stock. (sentimental reasons, for now anyways.)

the best year???? 99.
i love my 99. it has the newer intake, a non 0331 head. yes i have a dist.,but it is non-adjustable. so it is a non issue. and i think all XJ's no matter the year needs tastfully trimmed fenders...lol.
the nicest thing about the 99 is; my back windows go all the way down.

98-99 were what I decided on when deciding another XJ was in order, heres what brought me to the decision.
97-99 has the updated styling with the newer interior (I gotta have cup holders and comfort) a steel rather than fiberglass hatch, the beefier Chrysler 8.25 29 spline rear, HP D-30 and a little more rounded look which I just prefer.
97 was out simply because history has taught me not to buy the first year of a model change, I was probably being paranoid, but thats just my rule.
2000-01, all the styling and comfort upgrades as the 97-99's, but.... head problems, distributorless ignition = problems and cost IMO. Too much damn emission garbage introduced as Chrysler faught to keep the Feds happy in the last two years of production and I did'nt want a low pinion front diff. So, those years were out for me.
I went with the 98, my son with the 99 and we could'nt be happier, and I have a place for my coffee cup to boot, Lol!

Ive got a 99 limited, love it with the exception of leather. Gives me terrible back/crack sweat in the summer months. Haha
