what's with the whole "tap the gas" thing?
all i've ever done was let off gas, shift to 4hi and go
i used to shift into neutral for a long time but never tapped the gas. i would think that could send you into a spin on slippery snow, especially if locked.
yep, from a stand still, trans in neutral, 4 lever into 4hi and away you go.

In his manual it did mention that it engages faster if you give the gas a tap after shifting into 4wd hi on the fly. It did not say it was absolutely necessary to do, just that it engages quicker.

ah, you see, i never read manuals. i'm sure i'm missing a lot of unnecessary info. lol
well, if tapping the gas works, just don't tap too hard i guess.
and don't pull the lever when the wheels are spinning.

Pretty sure this thread has been answered by you lol. I love when more people add unnecessary stuff. Drive, release gas, shift, keep driving. No tapping gas. Goin to neutral etc. YES you can shift from a stand still without going into neutral, just pull lever but honestly if you haven't used 4hi often, it may not shift right away. Which is normal.

Well then, from the factory owner's manual with a few tips added by me:
Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual. The suggestions in CAPS are mine.
"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I LET OFF THE GAS, THROW THE LEVER, TAP THE GAS AND LET OFF.
4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".
TO SHIFT OUT OF 4L, SHIFT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL WITH THE VEHICLE STOPPED, SHIFT THE TRANSFER CASE LEVER TO 2H, THEN THE TRANS TO D IF YOU HAVE AN AUTOMATIC, OR INTO FIRST GEAR WITH A MANUAL, AND CONTINUE ON.
